and has only five numbered games; in fact, there are significantly more projects released under this brand, including a portable non-numbered Dimensions for Nintendo 3DS, fan service volleyball for PlayStation Portable and, of course, several re-releases of the fifth part. Actually, today’s review is dedicated to the last of them - Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, which was released for all major modern home systems. True, the PC version is still on the road. I would like to make a reservation right away: the review below is based on what is present on our website for the PlayStation Vita, that is, it will describe what has changed and been added during the period from the portable edition to the “Last Round”. Characters, abilities and so on. By the way, if you are the lucky owner of the Ultimate edition on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, then all characters and additions can be transferred to Last Round for free, including to the next generation console.

The fighting games of the Dead or Alive series may be known mainly as some kind of tit fighting games, where the main attraction is female characters in a variety of outfits, but treating it like that is completely unfair. The fact is that there are excellent combat mechanics here, and this will certainly be noticed by any person who has been at least a little personally involved in martial arts, and has not limited himself to pressing controller buttons in some Mortal Kombat or Tekken. There is no aggression towards these series, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that Dead or Alive, especially the fifth part reviewed here, deserves at least no less attention. The coolness of the local combat system lies in the overall variety of fighting styles of the characters, of which there are already 34 fighters in the new version of the game - ten more than in Dead or Alive 5 Plus. Let's look at them first, and then continue with combat styles and mechanics. So, the following new characters became available in Last Round:
Marie Rose- a pretty and young girl of eighteen years old, originally from Sweden. She constantly walks around in the image of a gothic lolita, apparently thereby satisfying some internal fetish of her owner, the head of the Doatek corporation, Elena Douglas. She has long blonde hair, often tied into two large pigtails on the sides, and clear blue eyes. Marie Rose is also the shortest heroine in the Dead or Alive series. In general, we have before us a collection of many fetishes of many men on our planet. And this congregation also feels quite confident in battle.
  • Quote: “Let the blood red rose bloom.”
Honoka is a young high school student and martial arts expert who first appeared in the reviewed edition of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. Being a "regular Japanese schoolgirl", Honoka actually wears her school uniform. This heroine, in fact, is the same collection of fetishes as Marie Rose. Moreover, they have very similar facial features and are probably related somehow, even if this is not explained in the game. The fact is that these two heroines have a unique winning scene in team matches. In addition to deep red eyes and pink hair, often tied up with a skull-shaped hairpin (like in Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai!), this girl also stands out with the largest bust of all the heroines in the series.
  • Quote: “Now I’ll give it my all!”
Rachel- a blonde hunter of demonic creatures who first appeared in the game Ninja Gaiden, and in the Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate edition she arrived at the fifth tournament “Dead or Alive”. Interestingly, being a hunter who has set herself the goal of destroying all demons in the world, Rachel herself bears a demonic curse that has long crept into her family. She became very close friends with Ryu Hayabusa during her journey, the purpose of which was to kill her own sister - the demon's blood took over the girl's will and completely absorbed her humanity. Thanks to Rue's help, Rachel manages to put her sister to rest, and from that very moment this couple... not to say that they are inseparable, but very friendly.
  • Quote: “The night has passed, dawn is coming.”
Nyotengu- a female raven who first attended the tournament in the Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade update, and then reached the console versions of the fighting game. This heroine radiates sexuality and lust, being immeasurably beautiful, but few would think that in front of them is a creature with not only inhuman origin, but also inhuman age. She appears to be about 23-26 years old, but in fact she has lived for more than a thousand years. Nyotengu was introduced into the game as an alternative version of an old acquaintance named Bankotsubo - the main boss of the second part of the series and also a male tengu. But unlike the original, they decided to give Nyotengu a more human appearance. Actually, it’s safe to say that the developers were very successful in this and even the crow’s wings somehow don’t bother us.
  • Quote: “My cunning... rules all... the universe!”

Phase 4- another clone of Kasumi, this time much more natural and high quality than Alpha-152. It was created by the MIST corporation for the so-called “Project Alpha”, and first became available to the player in the Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade update, along with Nyotengu. Being Victor Donovan's finest creation, Phase 4 was sent to the battlefields - appearing in the first video of the story campaign, attacking Bayman and his men somewhere in the Middle East. It was she who left this big guy with scars on his body and face. All of her battles were tests for the potential of Phase 4, leading up to the planned launch of mass production of these clones. But it hasn't happened yet. For now. We are waiting for the sixth part of the series!
  • Quote: “Why should I fight? Is this really my only meaning in life?

Raido- Shinobi expelled from the Mugen Tenshin clan and the main villain in the first part of the Dead or Alive series. Along with Honoka, he becomes available to players for the first time in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. Raido is Shiden's brother and therefore Hayate and Kasumi's uncle. He also treacherously raped Ayame, Shiden's wife, as a result of which the woman gave birth to his second daughter, Ayane. It’s ironic, but his own niece ended his life in the first part of the series, accusing him of killing his brother - then it was assumed that Hayate died, but later it became known that the assumption was wrong. Victor Donovan, an experimenter and madman, took Raido's dead body and managed to revive the villain in the form of a semi-cybernetic ninja, replacing half of his body with implants of various kinds and functionality.
  • Quote: “I want your skills. Reveal your secrets to me!”
Ein- not so much an independent character as an alter ego of the runaway ninja Hayate, brother of Kasumi and Ayane. It first appeared in the second part of the series, and became available to players in Dead of Alive 5 Ultimate. According to the history of the series, Ein appeared when Hayate was being experimented on at the Doatek Corporation during the Epsilon Project - then he lost his memory and trained again, learning karate. During that time, he became friends with a cute girl named Hitomi, also a participant in the Dead or Alive tournaments, and fought with many of his former comrades, including his sisters. Moreover, he managed to defeat Kasumi. During the second tournament, Hayate's memories returned to him and he managed to become himself again.
  • Quote: “I remembered... my name is Hayate. I am a wind shinobi. Kasumi... forgive me."
Jackie Briant- another guest character in this series, who came to the Dead or Alive tournament from another famous fighting game series - Virtua Fighter. Became available in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. Jackie is the older brother of another tournament guest, Sarah Briant. In addition to his excellent skills in Jeet Kune Do, he also quite successfully and professionally drives a racing car while participating in competitions. Absolutely obsessed with speed in everything, he races until he fights, and simply cannot stand anyone he considers too slow. Quite arrogant and daring, but at the same time a cheerful character who is ready to do anything to achieve his goals and preserve what is dear to him. For example, he is ready to deal with an entire gang alone in order to protect his own precious racing career.
  • Quote: “I’m faster than lightning!”
Leon- a professional mercenary and expert in sambo and close combat, who first appeared in the second part of the series. Became a participant in tournaments in tribute to his deceased lover, Lorraine. This big guy has a lot in common with Bayman, also a military man who was directly involved in many military conflicts in various hot spots of the globe. Surely someone might now think that this character is somehow inspired by Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil, but this is not so. A kind of prototype for this hero was his namesake, Leon from the French film of the same name by Luc Besson - “Leon”, also known as “The Professional” or “Leon the Killer”. He often likes to say "I'm a professional", which is also a reference to this film.
  • Quote: “Lorraine, are you watching me?”

All new characters in the game have their own stories and combat skills. However, many of their techniques, to one degree or another, repeat the techniques of other characters in the game. Actually, this is not surprising, because in real martial arts there are also enough fighting techniques that are common to several different fighting styles. I just can’t help but note that, compared to other fighters, Jackie seemed quite interesting to me, thanks to his high speed and variety of techniques. But what turned out to be unusual was the focus of his fighting style on interruptions, or so-called “cancels”. Probably none of the fighters in this game have such a number. I don't play much fighting games, but I've heard that interrupts are used heavily in the Tekken series and especially in Tag Tournament 2. The character Raido seemed like a hulking hulk to me, but many of his moves are quite fast, and his throw sequences can easily compete with Ryu Hayabusa according to its complexity.

But from Honoka I expected a somewhat more frisky fighting style - although it is pleasant and quite easy to play with her: powerful blows, simple initial series and throws, her movements sometimes seem somewhat slow. However, it’s not surprising, considering the size of this girl’s breasts - it’s probably in the way. But she performs the throws with a bang, like most local characters. Still, this cannot be taken away from the Dead or Alive series - the throw system. A lot has been built on it. As well as on the system of intercepting enemy attacks, which also often turns into some kind of throw. It seems to me that one of the parts of Dead or Alive was the first fighting game to qualitatively and successfully implement these same interceptions, allowing players not only to block an enemy’s blow, while receiving reduced damage, but with a well-timed combination of buttons to intercept a hand flying at a fighter or leg, and send their owner flying. Or to the ground, as in one of the screenshots here Marie Rose did to Elena.

Like any other fighting game, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round is ready to present its players with not only a decent number of characters to choose from. There are many combat arenas here, a dozen more have been added since Dead or Alive 5 Plus, including the classic, but redesigned “Danger Zone” arena from Dead or Alive 2. There are also quite interesting modes in which the player can spend time, both alone and with other players. All the old modes are present - varied training, testing your own capabilities, training, arcade mode, and survival. But it’s simply impossible not to note the appearance of the pair battles mode, which is available for single-player arcade playthroughs, and for multiplayer games with up to four people. Both over the network and on one gaming system.

The visual part of the game has also been greatly improved - the battle arenas have become more detailed, and the character models have definitely gotten better, now they look much more natural. Previously, the fighter models in Dead or Alive also looked good, but they looked much more like some moving figures from Play Arts KAI than like people. It’s also impressive how the heroes’ clothes move during battle, how dirt and dust settle on them. A trifle, in fact, but it adds its modest effect. The destructibility of battle arenas seems to have remained the same, but the number of small effects on them has increased - falling sakura leaves, sparks of flame and other little things. I haven’t played Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, but compared to Dead or Alive 5 Plus, the flights outside the battle arena look amazing in Last Round - quite detailed and with a lot of effects, like boards flying into splinters, independently falling pipes and so on. Actually, this also indicates good work with physics. Well, the breasts, yes... the female breasts move more than naturally, but this can be changed in the options by choosing one of several bust movement effects. I switched from original to LR for example.

The review was written based on the digital version of the game for PlayStation 4 provided by the publisher.

How to open Marie Rose

Marie Rose is a paid character, purchased in the game itself for an additional fee.

The peak popularity of fighting games occurred at the end of the last century, when cult franchises like Tekken, Mortal Kombat and Dead or Alive began to emerge. The latter, by the way, interested the players not at all with the sound of broken limbs and crazy combinations, although this also had a place - the main feature of almost every part was the heroes, or rather heroines, and even more precisely their forms and physics.

For better or worse, DOA is a Japanese franchise, and the Japanese are famous for their passion for releasing and re-releasing all sorts of ultra-mega-hyper-super-turbo editions of their games (just remember). The same fate befell: the game survived portable, arcade and “maximum” reincarnations.

Now it’s on everyone’s lips as a place where the developers managed to cram all the content they had come up with over the years of painstaking work. The game was released on consoles at the end of February, and a couple of days ago it reached PC. The time has come to find out what the Japanese have done to please the adherents of the people's platform.

Paradise for the eyes

Any unprepared reader who has never encountered this game will probably think that we are joking when we mention the heroines’ breasts and their importance in the general background. But no, the first of April was yesterday, and there is no place for jokes, and the beautiful and realistic forms of the girls really are in first, second and third places. There are, of course, men in the game - huge cabinets with Schwarzenegger's biceps - but, let's be honest with ourselves, will anyone really play for them? Just for fun.

But let's take things in order. Let's start, perhaps, with the storyline, which, oddly enough, is quite interesting, with a very diverse narrative. The fact is that there are several main characters in the game, and you need to control (fight) each of them in turn, depending on the plot. The main event is the tournament, in which the characters will take part. In fact, our story can end here, since the main differences from its predecessors are small details and a bunch of bonus content, which will be discussed below.

Finished and re-sawn

In addition, the game includes all the goodies from previous versions and DLC such as unique costumes and new levels. We feature 34 fighters - an absolute record for the series. It may not be as diverse as in Naruto Shippuden, but here each fighter has his own well-developed fighting style. We will not analyze each one in detail - it is much more pleasant to look at them in action.

Non-lethal battle

As for the gameplay, nothing has changed here. You can still gather a group of four people, choose a girl or guy and start having fun. No, we're still talking about fights, not a swingers' party. Starting the topic of combat, we can’t help but mention the dynamic combat system. Even during your first fight, interaction with the character is quite easy. Special moves and combos are performed without dancing with a tambourine, and no smoke will come from the gamepad in your hands. The developers managed to find the line between casualness and dynamic fights in the Tekken style, but with their own twist.

Each hero has a different fighting style, and therefore, given the number of characters, you can study the game for quite a long time before it gets boring. The game also has multiplayer, in which players can take part in tournaments for the title of the fastest. It is noteworthy that the ability to play online is not yet available for PC, and will appear only in three months when the corresponding update is released.

Results

If we take into account the wild inattention of the developers to the PC version of the game, then we can safely sign up for ordinary fighting games, by passing by which you will not lose anything. However, if you remember what this fighting game is about, the desire to familiarize yourself appears.

This is not so much a game as a mini-collection of all the good things that have accumulated in the series and specifically in the fifth part over the past few years. If you liked the game's trailers, it's still worth a try, but don't expect Mortal Kombat or Tekken levels, as they're still different weights.

P.S. - perhaps the main disadvantage of the game is the complete lack of Russian localization, which will clearly upset users who are not versed in English.

The first Dead or Alive was released in 1996 and was a banal clone of Virtua Fighter. Perhaps this would have been the end of the story if the developers had not decided to focus on sexy female fighters. Not only were they very cute, but they also boasted three-dimensional breasts that swayed with every movement. And while performing many techniques, the heroines showed the gamers their underwear.

The combat system, like almost everything in the game, was copied from Virtua Fighter. Only three buttons are used - punch, kick and block. Combined with the directional direction of the analog D-pad, they allow for a huge number of hits - no less than in any other decent 3D fighting game. The main feature of the combat system is intercepting blows. This is a kind of analogue of Guard Impact from Soul Calibur - enemy blows can not only be blocked, but also parried. Just press the block button in combination with the desired direction (upper, middle or lower blow). The unlucky opponent is automatically inflicted very serious damage.

Dead or Alive (arcade, Saturn) – The original Dead or Alive was developed for the Sega Model 2 arcade chipset and was later ported to the Sega Saturn. Dead or Alive had eight fighters and a boss. An important difference from other fighting games is the idea of Danger Zone; The enemy can be hit against the edges of the arena (in later games, other “dangerous” objects), after which he receives additional damage and is often thrown into the air. Additionally, Dead or Alive is the most advanced 3D game on the Sega Saturn. The only depressing thing was that in the arcade version the backdrops were three-dimensional, in the Saturn version they are flat. But console players got high-quality music and an introductory video, and in the options they could turn off the “Bouncing Breast” item. Completing the game unlocked several costumes.

DEAD OR ALIVE - a brief history of the series and characters

Dead or Alive (PS one) – the PlayStation version differs from the original more than other sequels. Firstly, the graphics have been significantly improved (compared to the Saturn!) - the number of polygons has increased, previously missing effects have been added. Secondly, two new characters appeared - wrestler Bass and ninja Ayane. Thirdly, the number of secret costumes has increased (up to 13 pieces per person!). This version was ported to arcades under the name Dead or Alive++.

DEAD OR ALIVE - a brief history of the series and characters

Dead or Alive 2 (arcade, DC, PS2) – multi-level arenas were introduced in the game for the first time. Or rather, they appeared a little earlier than Samurai Shodown 64, but it’s unlikely that any of our readers could have seen it. It is very easy to get confused in the various re-releases of Dead or Alive 2. The main thing is to remember that the versions for DC and for PS2 differ in the graphics engine (for some reason it is generally accepted that the game looks better on DC), and the American and Japanese versions differ in the number of costumes and playable characters . The most complete version is the Japanese edition of Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore for PS2.

DEAD OR ALIVE - a brief history of the series and characters

Dead or Alive 3 brought virtually nothing new to the genre or to the series. Just a very beautiful continuation of Dead or Alive 2 with great arenas and several new heroes. Finally, normal final CG videos have appeared, but the number of costumes is small.

Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball - all the heroines of the series (plus a new one, Lisa) go to a tropical island to swim and play beach volleyball. But this is not a sports simulator. Girls usually play volleyball half the time, and the other half they try to earn money (for example, in a casino). The goal of the game is to buy as many cool swimsuits as possible and see how they will look on the heroines. Actually, that's all.

Dead or Alive: Paradise (PSP) What was intended as another collection of exciting mini-games with the participation of the most beautiful girls, in fact turned out to be just a clumsy parody.

CHARACTERS

Some may think that the girls in Dead or Alive look like dolls and are unremarkable except for their shape. So, on purpose for such sexists, we decided to tell in more detail about the life of charming, militant, inimitable and so different girls who are not at all going to give birth to children at the stove with a frying pan in their hands. About men... well, some other time.

There are as many as twelve girls in Dead or Alive 5 (not counting the boss), but only five of them were present, one might say, at the origins of the series - in the landmark second part for the Dreamcast. We will tell you about them.

Having escaped from the home village of the Mugen clan, Tenshin doomed herself to eternal wandering and flight, because a ninja who left the clan is considered persona non grata who must be destroyed. Despite her peacefulness and kindness, she coldly kills Raido, the traitor who sent her brother into a coma.

One can only imagine how strong the spirit lives in this charming body. Wandering the world all your life, and even being afraid of getting a blade in the back from your own relatives, is actually damn unpleasant.

She grew up in the shadow of her cousin's fame as a "cursed child" - fathered by the villain Raido, who raped her mother. She strived to become the most powerful ninja of her clan and prove her worth. She will stop at nothing and will kill anyone who gets in her way.

She did not achieve much success in this, but she took over the DOTAC corporation, which holds the Dead or Alive tournament (and then rivets clones, trying to create the ideal super-soldier).

Instead of reading Paulo Coelho and drinking mate, like all the normal romantic girls of her age, she fell in love with the narcissistic Gianna Lee, who once saved her from bullies. Since then, she has been running after him to all tournaments in the hope of beating him and thereby proving that she really doesn’t care about him - however, she has never succeeded. He constantly finds himself in stupid situations from a cheap anime: either the wind will pull up your skirt, or an old man on the subway will grab his chest while falling. However, Lei Fang is a very strong fighter and masters the slow and measured style of Tai Chi Xuan.

Tina Armstrong

A blonde who dreams of Hollywood, a professional wrestler and just a wonderful girl with breast number four. For four games she looked like Hulk Hogan, but in Dead or Alive 5 she finally looked better.

Tina really wanted to go to Hollywood, but her father Bass (also a wrestler) was against it and wanted his daughter to follow in his footsteps. The girl signed up for the tournament to be noticed, defeated everyone except Kasumi, but pocketed the prize fund. Tina can't choose what she wants to become - a model, an actress, a rock musician... or even run for state governor. Poor Bass no longer knows what to do with his careless daughter!

Tina Armstrong is a grappling specialist, so if you have arms and legs, she's sure to break them when you meet her. Just some kind of quirk.
