Me and my faithful keeper. Review of The Last Guardian

The outgoing year can rightfully be called successful for long-term construction projects. , waving a shotgun and clanking dirty industrial music, showed who the main shooter in the universe is after all. A small team released an entertaining platformer called Owlboy, which had been in development for about ten years. It even made it to the shelves. All that was missing for complete happiness was The Last Guardian, but due to numerous postponements, until recently it was not believed that the release would take place. However, it’s one thing to release a hotly anticipated game, and another to live up to those expectations.

And ragdoll physics doesn’t look very appropriate in 2016. Watching how the body of the hero, clinging to the back of the beast with one hand, performs incredible somersaults, after which the limb would vomit with meat, is simply funny. The same applies to enemies - if Trico starts to bite someone, then the enemy’s body behaves completely inappropriately. Next to the perfectly animated animal it looks very bad.

Although what raises the most questions is not even the terrible frame rate, but the disgusting, vile camera. Most of the deaths happen precisely because of her passionate love for idiotic angles. Let's say you need to get down from the beast onto some small platform, and do it quickly, but the operator will show the scene in such a way that without careful aiming the hero will go straight into the abyss. It’s better to forget about back riding indoors altogether, unless, of course, you want to test your vestibular apparatus for strength. It's a shame, but the constant struggle with the camera prevents you from enjoying The Last Guardian to the fullest.

There seem to be few shortcomings, but they are all almost critical. In a project that has been in development for nine years, it’s strange to see an inadequate operator, and sometimes you won’t see such poor optimization even in a mid-range multiplatform. There is hope for patches, but they can only patch small bugs and not fix more important things.

Otherwise, The Last Guardian is a worthy follower of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Like Ueda's previous games, this one is not for everyone - fans of modern projects with thousands of hints should be especially careful - but this does not change the fact that the Japanese game designer managed to create an amazing adventure telling about the friendship between man and wild animal. And this person is you. You tame the animal, learn to communicate and interact with it, and become more and more sympathetic to the unusual creature. By the end of the journey, you become so attached to Trico that you don’t want to let go of the bird, because in ten hours he becomes a true friend. Eh, if such species existed in real life!

An emotional and unique computer toy, embodied in the action-platformer genre with puzzles, quests and a dramatic scenario, the implementation of which was spent a lot of time by representatives from two gaming communities: Sony Computer Entertainment, Japan Studio. Therefore, if you want to get a re-release of one of the most “fabulous” computer toys of our time, then we recommend The Last Guardian, download the torrent using the services of our website. So, let's highlight all the interesting things about this product. Features of graphics, gameplay and plot.

First, visualization. The developers did their best to create the game world of this product. Locations have become larger and richer in new objects. In addition, many objects in this world can be influenced by the player. It is worth noting that the detailing, special effects, and hand-drawn textures look even better. And this is not surprising, because many years have passed since the release of the first game. At the same time, our heroes remained unchanged - an unknown boy, and his “pet” - the huge griffin Trico with the “agility” and clumsiness of a small kitten. And in addition to this, the developers were able, by introducing innovations in terms of visualization, to preserve the very atmosphere that captivates the player to this day all over the world. Therefore, if you want to evaluate the long-awaited product, then we strongly advise you to use our resources and do not miss the chance to download The Last Guardian, for which you can and even should use our website via torrent.

So, let's highlight all the interesting features in the gameplay. Secondly, the game mechanics. In fact, game process built according to the same canons as regular 3D platformers. You have to control the boy to move around the location. Jump over obstacles, solve puzzles, and much more that you will encounter throughout the game. But there is one feature that no other game can boast of. Literally from the first seconds, the characters from The Last Guardian evoke empathy from the players. The way the boy communicates with the griffin and how the “pet” reacts to the boy is truly touching. Therefore, if you want to try out the features of this game and see the best with your own eyes, then we recommend The Last Guardian, download via torrent, for which you will need the help of our site.

Features of The Last Guardian

Amazing picture. The developers have tried to improve the visualization game world, and at the same time leave the traditional atmosphere, which they achieved one hundred percent. They implemented new engine, new special effects, improved detail, updated and new locations that will give prominent gamers a chance to get annoyed and get acquainted with innovations for beginners.
Unique gameplay. You have to control the actions of a boy who has a “pet” - a huge griffin named Trico. Our griffin is still inexperienced and too young. Therefore, to overcome obstacles, he needs to be encouraged and helped in every possible way.
Classic platformer. Otherwise, the game is a classic 3D platformer. You have to overcome obstacles, solve puzzles, collect items for a collection, and more. It is worth noting that our heroes will have mandatory tasks.
Dramatic plot. The game's script includes an emotional plot, an illustration of the connection between two incomparable and completely different creatures - a man and a griffin. Despite this, the player will feel compassion and empathy for the revealed images of these characters.

The Last Guardian is a Japanese action-adventure game exclusive to PlayStation 4. The game was released worldwide in December 2016. The player controls a boy who befriends the giant Trico, who is half bird and half mammal. He must manipulate Trico, for example by luring him with food. This is how the player reaches remote places. At the same time, he must avoid enemies.

Team Ico began developing The Last Guardian in 2007. The game's designer and director was Fumito Ueda. Stylistically, thematically and gameplay-wise, the game had similarities to his previous games Ico(2001) and ShadowoftheColossus(2005). Ueda used the design-by-subtraction approach he'd tried with previous games, removing elements that didn't complement the core theme of the bond between the boy and Trico.

Sony announced Last Guardian at E3 2009, with plans for a PlayStation 3 exclusive release in 2011. The game was postponed several times. Ueda and other members of Team Ico left Sony, and hardware difficulties forced the game to be transferred to the PlayStation 4 in 2012. At that time, speculation began to arise that the game would never be released. Ueda and his studio genDESIGN, made up of former Team Ico members, remained as creative consultants, and Ueda himself retained his role as director of Sony's in-house Japanese technical development studio. Last Guardian was presented again at E3 2015, promising a release in 2016. There, the game was praised for its art, story, and Trico's portrayal, although some criticized Trico's stale gameplay and incoherent behavior.

Plot

The game has thematic similarities to Ico And ShadowoftheColossus. Her story is framed as an old man's recollection of his childhood, where he met Trico, a giant feathered griffin-like creature. The name of this creature in Japanese can be understood as "prisoner" (toriko), "chick" (tori no ko) or a combination of "bird" (tori) and "cat" (neko).

...The boy is kidnapped under mysterious circumstances and taken to a large, spacious castle. He wakes up and discovers tattoos on his body that were not there before the abduction. The boy manages to escape and is captured and meets Trico. Trico is shackled, has numerous spears lodged in his body, and his wings are too scarred to be capable of flight. The boy helps remove the spears, remove the chain and feed the hungry creature. At first, Trico is hostile to the boy, but little by little he begins to accept his care and advice. Together, the pair work to continue their escape, avoiding the castle guards or engaging them in combat. An important part of the game is the development of friendship between the boy and Trico.

While the player completes various tasks, he is accompanied by a narrative voiced in Japanese. In the narrative there may be useful recommendations by progress if the player gets stuck.

Ueda hinted that there might be creatures similar to Trico in the game, but did not confirm this. During development, some critics, such as the webcomic Penny Arcade, expected an ending in the vein of Ueda's previous games: one or both characters would die. In response to these theories, Ueda replied that history is unlimited.

Gameplay

Last Guardian is a 3rd person game that combines action-adventure and puzzle elements. An unarmed boy controlled by the player can run, jump, climb and perform other actions, which reminds us of the gameplay Ico And ShadowoftheColossus. Also, the player can use the environment to move silently or eliminate shadow guards. The guards, although moving slowly, are able to catch the boy. If in this case the player fails to free the boy in time, the game will end.

The player's movements are complemented by interaction with Trico, whom the boy can climb on like a horseman. According to Ueda, Trico is driven by his own instincts, and the player must figure out how to harness them to solve puzzles. For example, the player can throw a barrel, which will attract Trico's interest and make him move in a certain direction. The player can make the boy jump to encourage Trico to jump over the large gap. Sometimes, on the contrary, you need to make Trico sit still until the player finishes the job. Trico can shoot lightning from his tail. Lightning works in tandem with a mirror shield: the player redirects them to solve spatial puzzles or attack enemies. Unlike typical video game companions that respond instantly to the player's commands, Trico is difficult to control. Sometimes it takes several attempts to get Trico to perform the desired action. An idea of Trico's current mood can be obtained not only from his movements. The creature's eyes are informative: yellow, for example, means caution, and purple means anger and disgust.

The player must care for the creature by feeding it or removing spears and arrows from its body. Over time, control over the creature improves, and a kind of training of the creature occurs. At the beginning of the game, Trico may go off to study something that interests him more than the boy, he may refuse to eat something that smells bad, he may fall asleep whenever he wants. Improved control occurs after completing certain tasks. According to Ueda, " Each player will have his own Tricot: depending on the way you communicate with him" On the other hand, the player can take advantage of Trico's willfulness, allowing him to roam freely and discover new areas.

The player can unlock boy costumes by playing through the game multiple times. Some costumes are associated with Ico And ShadowoftheColossus.

Reception

On Metacritic, the game has good scores: 83% (83 ratings from critics) and 76% (770 reviews from players). Most reviews note high quality game environment and history. Some critics praised the realism of animal behavior, while others found the feature to be difficult and slow down gameplay.

Pete Brown at GameSpot praised the characters and their relationships and story as important aspects of the game. He drew attention to the extreme, at times, independence of Trico’s behavior: “ it’s unclear whether this is a test of your patience as an attractive but stubborn creature" Tom Senior at GamesRadar called Trico " gaming's greatest companion with artificial intelligence ", noted the subtle use of visual and audio features for the character and its impact on the gameplay. Simon Parkin in The Guardian praised Trico's design, the creature's interaction with the world and the puzzles. Simon called Trico " abused survivor” (since the boy saved him), noted meaningfulness and progress in the characters' relationships. Chris Carter in Destructoid said that " The details and realistic behavior of Trico and the boy are exciting, most developers would even try to achieve this effect"; he cited this aspect as a possible reason for the lengthy development. Jeremy Parish in US Gamer expressed his belief that the free-willed Trico is a revolution in character design. He also felt that the emotional relationship between Trico and the boy could only be effectively realized through the interactive means of a video game. Marty Silva at IGN had a different take on Trico's behavior: he found it annoying, along with the camera controls, especially in tight quarters. However, Silva felt the game's success in creating an attachment to the characters, in providing memorable moments. James Kozanitis in Game Revolution noted his discovery that sometimes Trico himself moves around the environment and performs tasks, so that control of him becomes " ineffective and unnecessary».

Reviews noted problems with the game's performance on the standard PlayStation 4 hardware configuration. Thus, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry noticed problems with rendering and frame rate on the PlayStation 4, while running in 1080p mode on the more modern PlayStation 4 Pro occurred without sagging in frame rate .

The Last Guardian is a worthy successor to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Like Ueda's previous games, this one is not suitable for everyone - fans of modern projects with thousands of tips should be especially careful - but this does not change the fact that the Japanese game designer managed to create an amazing adventure telling about the friendship of man and wild animal. And this person is you. You tame the animal, learn to communicate and interact with it, and become more and more sympathetic to the unusual creature. By the end of the journey, you become so attached to Trico that you don’t want to let go of the bird, because in ten hours he becomes a true friend. Oh, if only such species existed in real life!

But although programmers and animators often put a spoke in the wheels, the charm of the story does not let go until the very end. And some moments even make you open your mouth from amazement, from the surrounding beauty or from a particularly impressive game moment. Let with technical side not everything is smooth, but the creators managed to make a touching and heartbreaking story about friendship. A story about mutual help and self-sacrifice. A story with “soul”, and this is such a rarity in today’s world.

The Last Guardian is an extremely sweet game where relationships and emotions come first, rather than plot and action scenes. The game will make you think about friendship, devotion, and those bright feelings that are sometimes so lacking in real life.

Fumito Ueda's game of a lifetime is a pocket miracle. Feels like a kind of fruit of forbidden love Bloodborne, Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Colossus. Although, putting my hand where my heart apparently once was, I will say that this has probably never happened anywhere else. It is unknown how much effort the Japanese comrades spent on all this, but they did not spend it in vain. Maybe other colleagues in the shop will now realize how important serious AI companions are, and will begin to put this knowledge into practice. In addition, a feeling of a certain integrity of the game is created, which is especially valued in the adventure genre. On the other hand, due to the unusual nature of the gameplay itself, the general dampness and difficulty of distinguishing storyline The Last Guardian is at risk. In general, “five” for content, “four” for literacy.” Thus, they fell just short of Our Choice. Although you know what? Immortalize it in stone. Marble is fine.

The Last Guardian – unique game. Slow, meticulous and logical. Very extraordinary, art-house, but with serious technical flaws: sagging frame rate, inconvenient controls, and the graphics themselves are not particularly sophisticated. However, due to the fact that the project is very original, I don’t want to criticize it too much, because such creations are produced by only one person. I wish I could say the opposite, but I wouldn't recommend TLG to newbies. There is too high a chance that you will be left disappointed, misunderstood and regretting the money you spent. If you are ready to slightly expand the boundaries of your gaming experience, and at the same time went through the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, then this is your game.

Many players call The Last Guardian an arthouse project, and this is true. The game will definitely not be to the taste of many, like the ending of the trilogy “Ico – SotC – TLG”, it will definitely not suit all fans, but fans of something unusual will certainly be interested (quite justifiably). And since the text is written on behalf of the latter...

Fantasy world

A touching epitaph to the PlayStation 2 era, when publishers allowed themselves expensive original projects. The Last Guardian, being a long-term project, came from those times and makes the same strong impression as Fumito Ueda’s previous masterpieces - ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

The Last Guardian is flawed in every aspect. Unfortunately, even extra time would not have saved the game from failure. The developers, due to the problems with releasing the project and creating Trico's behavior pattern, missed the fact that they need to assemble the game around it. Let the shadow of some universe be built around a chamber plot, but the gameplay is not interesting. It will not be possible to refresh the riddles, because there are only a few ways to solve them, and even those have been used to the maximum. The fate of The Last Guardian is no different from other long-term construction: the anticipation was more beautiful than the release itself.

IGN Russia

Who played in Heavy Rain, he probably remembers the scene where Ethan Mars crawled inside a long pipe strewn with broken glass. This is roughly how you feel when playing The Last Guardian - as if you are crawling on your hands and knees over fragments, it’s dark all around, and the pipe just won’t end. There is no doubt: Team Ico has created an authentic image of the animal, for which they can be praised. It was possible to build an emotional connection between the beast and the player. But build on all this decent game it didn't work out that way. The product is one of those that you definitely need to at least touch. But it is not at all necessary to go through it completely, much less ever return here.

We understand that many will call the beast stupid, but signs of his stupidity appeared only a couple of times during the passage, otherwise Triku behaved very lively. At first, his actions were difficult to predict, but after some time, understanding him as a living being allows us to see new facets in the gameplay. He needs to eat, he is greedy for smells, he often loses his temper during battle - all this is expressed not only in the color of his eyes. Its animation is easy to believe; it is truly a huge unknown beast, clumsy but graceful. In a word, genDESIGN did a great job.

And in general, they don’t do that anymore, at least not in expensive exclusives for the most popular consoles. Nowadays it’s common to post everything at once, the player just has to taste the story in a new pack of videos. Then shoot, then jump. In The Last Guardian, every classic element of gameplay is inextricably linked with a sense of friendship and trust, organically forming perhaps the most valuable project of the past year.

The Last Guardian took nine years to make. This game should have been released on the PlayStation 3 a long time ago, but it came out only now, having changed almost unchanged since its announcement - at least conceptually. Can we call it outdated? If she had come out five years ago, the effect would have been stronger. But while we waited, the games moved in the same direction that Fumito Ueda had been digging all his life. Journey, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and others like them worked as brilliantly with the player's emotions as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus did in their time. In such company, The Last Guardian looks even more organic. As if this is how it should be.

The authors proposed a wonderful idea with two completely different characters, told a touching story about friendship and mutual assistance, created excellent, diverse puzzles, and built an attractive world with its own mythology. However, the stunning impressions of this magnificence, as if on purpose, were spoiled by the overly capricious behavior of the griffin and camera, as well as poor optimization on PS4. If you want to play without lags, buy a PS4 Pro.

Without a doubt, The Last Guardian is Team ICO's greatest work and one of best games for PS4. The world is magnificent, and the touching story of a strong friendship between a little boy and a huge beast is captivating. It's just a pity that there are numerous errors technical plan prevents you from enjoying the game to the fullest.

Game world navigator

The most famous example outside of Japan of this method of presenting a plot is the canonical manga “Kozure Okami” and the film “Shogun Assassin” based on it. Anyone to whom these names mean nothing risks abandoning The Last Guardian about twenty minutes after the start and thereby depriving himself of the unforgettable experience of a controversial, poignant, sometimes cruel, but still beautiful story about friendship, duty and honor, imaginary freedom of choice and true freedom of conscience, which is given to every rational being both as a gift and as a test.

The Last Guardian is a game of emotions that takes the player into his childhood dreams and dreams. Who hasn’t dreamed of going on a real fairytale journey with their pets? This game makes that dream come true virtual world, offering us a sincere and full of feelings, joy and pain adventure. Almost without words, but with a lot of gestures that say much more than words. Yes, the project is terribly clumsy, the controls sometimes turn into a nightmare, the wayward Triku makes you want to change mercy to rage and hit him on his growing horns with something heavy, the camera performs somersaults as if it is in the clutches of a drunken owl, and the game design is hopelessly outdated. But the reward for overcoming these difficulties and fighting the wayward beast is invaluable. Just like this game.

The Last Guardian is not at all the game that Team Ico fans have been waiting for for several years. It has moments of unearthly beauty and aspirations for something great. The idea itself sounds very cool, but the implementation of this idea is not just unsuccessful, but a failure. Perhaps The Last Guardian really should have been cancelled, as Sony was rumored to have done at one point. Then she would forever remain an ephemeral memory of something unfulfilled, but wonderful. Alas, Fumito Ueda's team finally released this game, and the reality turned out to be far from being as beautiful as the picture that the trailers and screenshots painted. The only consolation is the opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery. At least the developers of The Last Guardian have not lost their artistic taste - and thank you for that.

The new creation of Ueda Fumito is a very unusual project, there is something alive and soulful in it. Like the main characters who travel through a dark and gloomy world, The Last Guardian stands out among modern AAA blockbusters. The game, like the strange creature Triku, surprises time after time with its unpredictability and alienness. Is it worth buying? If you own a PS4, you should probably at least give it a try. Sometimes a truly unique piece has to wait. And how nice it is when your expectations are not in vain.

Otherwise, The Last Guardian feels like a visitor from the past. The game ignores all modern trends and seems to exist in some kind of its own little world, where diverse gameplay has never been heard of. You shouldn’t be afraid of this: the game is primarily based on its atmosphere fairy tale, and that is great. Fans of Fumito Ueda's previous games will be delighted with this approach. The Last Guardian is a unique game. It's not about a long wait or a twisted plot with an open ending. It's about the smile that appears on your face while playing with a beast that is menacing on the outside, but infinitely kind on the inside. She's... in your heart, if you like.

Catonauts

Many will turn their nose up at the monotonous locations and simple mechanics, some will start counting the polygons in Trico’s feathers after so many years, because although the graphics have been improved, even through post-processing the ancient basis is visible. Before us is an example of Japanese courage, when SIE Japan Studio released an outdated, but long-awaited game, in the form in which it might have been expected in 2010, but was only received now. For all those who waited, for all those who every year asked “Well, how is The Last Guardian?” Here it is, exactly the same as it was promised, and it’s a little strange to expect a super-blockbuster from it after all the twists and turns.

The Last Guardian is worth playing, if only because it is the last great long-term construction for today. It's a real miracle that the game was still able to get to release. But despite its amazing ability to evoke emotional attachment to a virtual beast and pull out a variety of emotions from the player himself - from deep peace to caustic anxiety, it is impossible to turn a blind eye to the lousy gameplay. However, none of the game’s flaws prevented me from falling in love with it. They won't bother you either. I'm glad with all my heart that Fumito Ueda has finally finished the game and can now switch to something new without any problems. Another important page in the history of the gaming industry has been closed.
