For example, it is constantly heard, and it was even ported to consoles. But we haven’t heard anything about Car Mechanic Simulator for two whole years. New part became noticeably prettier and even acquired licenses, but the main complaints against it remained the same.
“Mechanic Simulator” 2018, without much prelude, throws you into the garage and leaves you alone with a whole bunch of incomprehensible things. The “Training Task” icon is lit at the top, but the most you can count on is descriptions of basic items like a welding machine or charger. The rest you need to figure out yourself. In our case, we managed to sell a brand new sedan in order to restore a rusty muscle car, and the task ended after a successful run-in of the assembled car. In the end, of course, we figured out the main nuances, but this happened in spite of the tutorial, and not thanks to it.
Free mode is the tenth thing. After the first fully assembled car, I just absolutely don’t want to deal with the second one. But completing the tasks turned out to be interesting. Even though the intermediate “missions” are simple and very monotonous. They simply bring the car to you and ask you to replace the parts according to the list. Plot tasks best characterize not so much the work of a mechanic, but rather the work with clients in general. See for yourself: some guy comes to you who played virtual racing very coolly and decided to race just as coolly in real life. Of course, he has little understanding of the symptoms of a breakdown, but asks to look at the engine because there is “something knocking” there. You reach into the engine and easily find all the broken parts except one. And this is where the real shamanism begins. At first, you do not have special equipment for diagnostics, as a result of which you have to remove and examine all the spare parts yourself. After removing the entire suspension and the entire engine, you will realize that the problem was a non-working radiator fan. At such moments, the game makes you swear. With love, but very loudly.
The most exciting question that many may ask is how closely the game is close to the real actions of the mechanics. The problem is usually that the more meticulous the simulator, the more boring it is to play. Car Mechanic Simulator holds up well in this regard. Except in very rare cases, no instructions are needed for disassembling the carburetor. The game doesn't force you to put washers on or check bolts for tightness. This, of course, is good: over time, you will learn to tighten the nuts faster and move around the garage. The gameplay runs very smoothly, without any lag in dynamics. But there is one very serious problem - the simulator cannot teach you anything.
Of course, the game does not position itself as a car repair manual. The point is this: the base that is in the simulator allows you to create an excellent platform for people who don’t understand a damn thing about units, but would really like to figure it out. If you have already dealt with, say, replacing calipers, you will easily recognize them. But what about those who have never encountered this in their lives? The game does not offer any descriptions of the details. To understand which way to dig when replacing this or that item, it is advisable to completely disassemble and reassemble the car. And at least a couple of times. In this case, memorization occurs without any practical benefit for real life. It's a pity.
Despite the fact that tinkering with the car is done very well, the game is bursting with a number of goodies, many of which are not implemented very well. For example, a test track: in order to check the condition of the suspension, an area inside the garage is enough. The developers decided to divide this diagnostic into two parts, and at the same time show the presence of a physics engine. It would be better if they didn’t do this - the cars turn poorly and brake even worse. Worn components have nothing to do with it - there is no difference between a brand new car and an old junk car. The client complains that the car tilts to the right, the entire right suspension can barely hold on, but the car drives calmly. The same is with the test track: with such physics, you will want to go there almost never. In the same one, for all its clumsiness, the controls were much more adequate.
Simply put, apart from the fun assembly/disassembly, there is nothing else of quality in the game. All the problems that the previous version had were transferred to the current one. There are not enough descriptions of spare parts or sane controls, and the improved graphics are practically invisible behind clumsy optimization. But the main thing is that even in such a mediocre performance, the simulator can be seriously addictive.
