  • Retrospective, developing into mass nostalgia for things from the past, encourages manufacturers to release once-iconic models in an updated version or even start producing original devices. The creators of the legendary “console” Sega Mega Drive, which was the most desired gift for many teenagers of the 90s, announced their intentions to re-release the console with minor technical improvements. True, the new product will most likely hit the market in a limited edition, so Sega fans shouldn’t count on mass production of this product.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which was introduced in 1991 and contributed to the unprecedented popularity of the console itself Mega Drive, and the main character of the arcade in the person of blue hedgehog named Sonic, Sega management is preparing two new products at once. The first will be the above-mentioned Sega Mega Drive for home use, and the second will be its portable version.

The production of both devices will be carried out by the Chinese company At Games, which specializes in the designated area and has chalked up several successfully reproduced retro consoles. The main feature of the updated version of the Mega Drive, which Sega is focusing on, will be support for the original cartridges used with the console a quarter of a century ago. Such a device will be connected to the TV panel via a modern HDMI interface, and to control virtual characters it will be equipped with two wireless gamepads.

As for the portable gaming console, it will be equipped with a 3.2-inch screen and familiar controls. The ability to charge the built-in battery here will be realized using a “micro-USB↔USB” cable. It is noteworthy that the consoles will be delivered with eighty “pre-installed” games. endogene/Giant Bomb

A platformer developed by Virgin Games based on the 1992 film of the same name. The game was released on the Sega Mega Drive in November 1993, and later appeared on other platforms. Disney's Aladdin was received warmly by critics - for example, the GameRankings website indicates that the average score is about 88 percent. The game has sold approximately four million copies.

    NBA Jam

    hartknight/Giant Bomb

NBA Jam is a basketball simulator developed by Midway and released for arcade machines in 1993. A year later, the game was ported to the Sega Mega Drive and other consoles. NBA Jam was one of the first sports games, which included league-licensed NBA teams and virtual players, similar to real basketball players. NBA Jam gained great popularity: for the Sega Genesis (as the Mega Drive was called in North America), the game sold at least 1.93 million copies in the United States alone.

    Mortal Kombat II

    lordofultima/Giant Bomb

The second part of the cult fighting game, also first - in 1993 - appeared for arcade machines (and also developed by Midway). Mortal Kombat II was later ported to consoles, specifically the Mega Drive. Compared to the first part, the game received, in particular, improved gameplay, as well as a number of new characters (among them - Kitana, Kung Lao, Noob Saibot). In the US, Mortal Kombat II (Genesis version) sold at least 1.78 million copies.

The Sega gaming console is first and foremost a classic game genre, easy-to-use joystick and intuitive interface, as well as variety colorful games, which your child of any age will enjoy playing. The advantage of console games over computer games is the absence of unnecessary unwanted information from Internet networks. Games on television consoles develop the motor skills of a child’s fingers, stimulate the development of logical thinking and force him to think about further actions, helping to increase his attentiveness to details and the world around him.

History of Sega and its first games

Sega is an international legendary corporation, a world-famous manufacturer of video games and gaming equipment.

In 1952, Sega released the famous slot machine " Sea battle" Success in the field slot machines inspired the company to create the Sega Master System home video game console in 1987. Two years later, in 1989, a new console was released in Japan and the USA Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), which sold millions of copies and brought the brand worldwide fame. Boys and girls in many countries around the world enthusiastically played the blue hedgehog Dream Interpretation, which became the mascot of Sega, and many other arcade and fairy-tale games. RPG games. The main characters run and jump through labyrinths, collect valuable items and fight enemies.

The first Sega consoles, which every child of the 90s dreamed of, were gaming equipment equipped with joysticks and output to a television screen. The game is recorded on a cartridge with a board or a memory card inserted into a special connector on the console. All Sega games even then had bright, colorful graphics and exciting, dynamic gameplay.

Sega developers have made a legendary contribution to the development of the entire gaming industry thanks to their numerous discoveries. It was they who came up with the first three-dimensional battle, which could be played by several users at the same time, and the first RPG ( role-playing game based on fantasy fairy tales) online. The symbol of Sega was the charming blue hedgehog Dream Interpretation, which was remembered by all the boys and girls of that time in the same way.

The difference between modern Sega consoles and consoles of previous generations

Sega gaming consoles are still very popular. Several generations enjoy playing them: both children and their parents, recalling the times of their childhood with nostalgia and rapture. Sega gaming consoles are an excellent alternative to playing games on a personal computer and tablet. A child can sit comfortably in front of a TV or laptop screen, controlling players with a joystick or shooting from a virtual pistol.

At the same time, you can play your favorite game with several friends, which makes the entertainment more dynamic. On modern consoles, games are recorded both on a separate cartridge and embedded on internal memory the console itself, which allows you to save a lot on cartridges. In addition, Sega's advantage is its budget price - within 1000 rubles with colorful animation and bright graphics.

This game console, which first appeared in 1988 on the global gaming market, immediately gained universal recognition. The company has developed about 1,000 different games for the console. The most famous of them are Mortal Kombat, Street racing, Sonic, tanks and Rambo. The modern 16-bit set-top box has the same electronics as its predecessors, except for a more compact size and proprietary design. The set-top box is sold in several colors and connects to the television screen via tulip connectors or a wireless antenna connection.

The disadvantage of the Sega Mega Drive, like all Sega games, is that accumulated progress is not saved. After about 4 hours of play, the body of the console may heat up, which is also not very safe.

This 16-bit gaming console is initially equipped with two calibrated gaming joysticks and built-in games in the processor memory. Another important advantage is the presence of a Multi Mega key, which allows you to play all Sega16-bit games of various encodings recorded on cartridges. Models of consoles are presented in black and white plastic housings.

Buying tip: choose a console with the largest number of built-in games. Depending on the model of the console, there can be from 30 to 120. Be sure to make sure that the set includes several joysticks so that your child can invite his friends to play together, three or even four.

Educational game consoles Sega Graduate student

For parents who want their child to not only play, but also learn something new at the same time, Sega offers the 16-bit Sega Aspirant console. It is equipped with a mouse, one joystick and a special computer assistant recorded on a cartridge for the console. Sega Graduate Student will help your child learn the basics of computer literacy, mathematics, geometry and English quickly and fun. A speech synthesizer is installed in the computer, so even a child who cannot read can easily communicate with educational programs.

The best Sega games for kids

    1. Mortal Kombat. The most popular game- these are realistic fights (fighting games) in Mortal Kombat. The child can choose the role of the character participating in the battles and fight in single combats with his friends and relatives. Each character has their own set of unique moves, which makes Mortal Kombat especially spectacular. A film was even made based on the game of the same name; today Mortal Kombat is considered a cult fighting game.
    2. LION KING. This fast-paced arcade (collection adventure) game is equally popular, but much less aggressive compared to brawlers. It is based on the Disney cartoon of the same name “The Lion King” and invites the player to feel like Simba. As the game progresses, depending on the plot, Simba either turns into an adult lion or again becomes a little lion cub, which looks very funny.
    3. Batman Forever. The game gives you the opportunity to feel like a real Batman, confronting enemies. Various abilities and items help the player complete various missions. The child can play the game either alone or with someone else: to do this, you just need to switch to the duel mode.
    4. Sonic the Hedgehog. Famous game from Sega about the famous blue hedgehog - the company's mascot. The restless hedgehog runs around the levels, collects vital items and confronts the evil enemy.

Sega game console: Reviews from parents

Elena Mirkina 32 years old, Yekaterinburg. I don't regret buying Sega at all. There were two joysticks in the box with the console, and now my son happily plays fighting and racing games with a friend. They sit down in front of a huge crane and begin their virtual battles. It’s inconvenient for them to play on a computer - the screen is too small for two people and it’s uncomfortable to sit. The son is very happy.

Mikhail Reutov 29 years old, Moscow. I grew up in Sega. So many unforgettable moments! My son is already growing up, we were recently in a store, and I saw a Sega Mega Drive. So many emotions came flooding in. Now we play together, and sometimes my son plays himself, he even abandoned his tablet. Here the joystick is convenient and the picture is like in cartoons. Classic!

Maxim Inokhodov 27 years old, Moscow. The joystick broke literally after a month, I was tired of replacing it with a new one. We played with our nephews and gave up. A couple of months later they gave it to a friend for their birthday.

Sergey Leushin 31 years old, St. Petersburg. Sega, of course, was once very cool, but I wouldn’t buy it for my children. Nowadays there are such 3D games that you don’t want to waste your money on flat graphics. Maybe some people like these games, but I'm not a fan.

Yulia Abramina 25 years old, Moscow. You can play Sega, but only once or twice. Progress is anew every time you turn on the console - it’s inconvenient for me, as well as for my daughter. Whether it’s ordinary online and downloaded games.

Natalya Vermenicheva 35 years old, Kaluga. And I remember how we played with my younger brother. Now I bought it for my children and are very pleased. There was no need to buy cartridges: all the games were already in the console.

    Evgeniy Peklo, editor-in-chief

My requests are very modest - from the Mega Drive Mini I need Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 and Comix Zone. I can easily do without the Golden Ax series - it already has an excellent port on computers, but the cult MK on PC is somehow not like that. The brutal trilogy did not appear on the Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES, so I have little choice. Well, as for Comix Zone, this masterpiece is needed always, everywhere and in any variations. And wrap up ten more sequels in addition, please - you’re still making new games for the Mega Drive Mini, what’s it worth to you?

But in general, the course taken towards retro-hardcore causes some caution. Nintendo has done a great job bringing fresh trends to old concepts: saves, the ability to connect to modern devices, regional translation, finally. And this is great - because remasters without serious reworking to suit current needs do not work, this has been tested many times! But, judging by the available data, SEGA aims to re-release the console almost as it was - with old connectors, “backwards compatibility” of cartridges and so on. Is it really needed by the market, where the Chinese can already make a Mega Drive clone, only much cheaper?

    Dmitry Shepelev, editor

I agree with Evgeny, if MDM doesn’t have the original Mortal Kombat trilogy, then why is all this even necessary? I also want to replay it Contra: Hard Corps— as a child, I was wildly impressed by this part of the franchise. She rhymed so much with the ones I just watched "Terminator" And "Strangers", that little me was completely confident that they belonged to the same super-cool universe of the 80s. I still remember the goosebumps from the scene when one of the bosses appeared. Here is a giant robot walking in the distance, behind the blazing high-rise buildings, and then makes a gigantic leap and finds itself right in front of the heroes. Uhhhh... And there was also an upright coyote with a gun and sunglasses. If that's not cool, then I don't know the meaning of the word cool.

    Rodion Ilyin, production editor

"Rambo", "Snickers" and "Sega". The big “RSS” of my childhood. It was the sixteen-bit SEGA console that determined the entire future, from personal interests and hobbies to professional activities.

The names listed by my colleagues became part of my life. And another reason for skipping school was a simple platformer Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure 1993 model. My friend and I played this arcade game day and night on Soviet TV. "Sadko". Despite the fact that this miracle of Soviet engineering did not support anything, and therefore the game was black and white. But still the most beautiful and exciting for us!

And how many joysticks we managed to break and assemble from debris and spare parts... And LEGO!
