Scrabble board game - classic version

Formally, the history of Scrabble began in the United States in 1938, when Alfred Butts created the prototype of the game called Criss-Crosswords. Ten years later, the work of the founding father of Scrabble was continued by James Bruno. It was he who gave the game its current name and rules. Four years later, Scrabble ascended to the Olympus American market entertainment.

At the same time, national versions of the game began to appear. The localization of Scrabble for the USSR was called “Erudite”. WITH detailed review this game is possible. Other varieties of Scrabble also emerged. The changes in them affected not only the name, which in our latitudes is often pronounced as “Scrabble”. There is a version for children, travelers, a modification of Twists & Turns, and a mathematical version.

And yet the most popular remains the classic Scrabble. It is played by millions of people in the most different countries, it is according to its rules that local tournaments and the world championship are held with an impressive prize fund. Who knows, maybe someday you will get it? A good reason to get to know Scrabble better now.

Game contents

The game comes in a bright green box, which you wouldn’t be embarrassed to give to someone as a gift. Packed inside are a playing field, a rule sheet, 102 letter tiles and 2 blank ones, a pouch and domino stands. There are only 4 of them, according to the maximum planned number of players. However, you can play with a larger group, just someone will do without stands, and the game itself will take less time.

The 18x18 mm chips are made of white plastic; they are light, smooth, and pleasant to the touch. The stands are also plastic, dark green, and quite ergonomic. During the game and subsequent storage, it is convenient to put the chips in a green cloth bag with the inscription Scrabble. All these elements are of high quality and good quality, even with intensive use they look like new for a long time.

The same cannot be said about the rules. The most important instructions are printed on a plain piece of paper, which wrinkles too easily. You need to handle it with extreme care, otherwise it will quickly lose its presentation and the letters will begin to wear off.

Durability playing field also raises serious doubts. The field itself is a square with a side of 27 cm, divided into 225 cells, 15 in 15 rows. It is printed on glossy paper, which is glued to hard, rough cardboard. The print quality is good, the different colors of the cells are clean and bright, the inscriptions do not blur and everything is translated.

But in order for the field to take up less space in the box, the solid base is folded in the center. And at the fold, the cardboard is thin, so it’s a matter of time before it wears out or breaks. Just in case, it’s better to be careful with him too.

Rules and game process

The box states that Scrabble is for 2-4 players. This is believed to be the optimal number of people for a party lasting approximately one and a half hours. In fact, there may be more players, up to 10 or more. It is important that everyone gets 7 letter chips. True, in this case the game will not last long and will not be very exciting. If there are 6-8 people in the company, everything is fine.

First, the participants in the game draw lots. That is, they pull out one at a time from the bag with all the chips. The one who gets the letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet gets the right to make the first move. To do this, the dominoes taken out for the draw are sent back to the bag, after which each player takes 7 chips from there. Of course, it’s better not to show them to your opponents.

Now you can start the game. The essence of Scrabble is to form words from the letters that the participants got. The first player places a word on the field, placing dominoes with letters vertically or horizontally so that one of them occupies the central square of the field. This square is marked with a star and doubles the points received for the word.

To calculate them, you need to add up the value of each letter written below it on the chip. (To count the points earned by the players, you will need paper and a pen. Moreover, you should write down not only the points, but also the words themselves - this is much more convenient.) Since the player has spent some of the chips, he takes out the same number of dominoes from the bag. So he again has 7 chips in his hands.

Meanwhile, the next party member adds one or more letters to the composed word. As a result, a new word should appear on the playing field. For this purpose, the use of the letters entered by the first participant is mandatory. You cannot form a separate word at the other end of the playing field just to get twice as many points.

Your letters can be placed between two different words (this opportunity appears closer to the middle of the game), in front of the word of the previous participant, behind it, at a right angle or parallel, close to it. In this latter case, the letters completely touching must form independent complete words.

This is difficult, but there is good news: it is allowed to use the plural form of words, case declensions of different parts of speech, including verbs of different tenses, particles. It’s easier to list what remains prohibited. You cannot use non-existent words, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, words with a hyphen, an apostrophe and proper names.

Having made his move, the player collects up to seven chips and counts points per word. By placing a letter correctly, you can earn double or triple the number of points for it or the entire word. All you have to do is occupy a colored prize square with a corresponding signature.

And there is one nuance here. Even those letters of the word he has composed that have already been placed on the playing field count toward the player’s overall score. But bonus points for those that landed on double or triple cells through the efforts of the previous participant do not bring bonus points a second time. Only the net value of each letter is considered.

This is how the entire gameplay goes. Participants make up their own words, count points for them, and try to get the most out of the letters they get. If a player is unable to form a word from the tiles in his hands, he skips a move or exchanges one of the dominoes in exchange for a pass. Naturally, at random.

A game of Scrabble is considered complete when the bag of chips is empty, one of the participants has completely used up their tiles, or everyone has missed two turns. The same thing happens if none of the players can form a word even after changing chips. Then the game ends, and the winner is the one who earned the most points.

Impressions from the game

Scrabble is deservedly considered a game not only interesting, but also very useful. According to competent experts, it develops logical thinking, attentiveness, expands vocabulary and increases literacy levels. Many experienced fans of the game compare it to chess and share winning strategies with each other.

Well, novice Scrabble fans are surprised to discover that this is an exciting and fun activity. After all, after reading the rules, you may get the impression that Scrabble is a complex and extremely boring game. In fact, the gameplay turns out to be much simpler and more fun than you expect.

The game is enjoyed by teenagers and adults, couples and large groups. A game of Scrabble is appropriate even at a holiday party, where finding out whether this or that word exists is carried out with special excitement. And this game is also a good non-trivial gift, for which you definitely won’t have to blush.

A word can kill, a word can save,
With a word you can lead the shelves with you...

Vadim Shefner, “Words”

Scrabble (Scrabble)– classic game, where more than one generation of families spent their evenings. It is known in 122 countries around the world as excellent intellectual entertainment.

About the game "Scrabble"

Scrabble was invented 80 years ago by American architect Alfred Butts. After ten years of unsuccessful implementation attempts and numerous improvements, it finally took off and united fans of crosswords and anagrams.

The game was originally called “Criss-Crosswords”, but the entrepreneur who bought it from the author renamed it “Scrabble” - it was under this name that it went down in history. “Scrabble” (scrabble, scrabble, scrabble, scrible – everyone pronounces it differently) is translated from English as ““frantically looking for something”, “rummaging”.

Over its long life, the game sold a hundred million copies. It is released in 31 languages. In the USA and Europe, regular championships are held for “word makers” who are ready to play Scrabble anytime, anywhere.

Of course the most popular original version for thoughtful play at the table. Road Scrabble differs from it in the structure of the field - it is not smooth, but with recesses for each piece, so that the shaking of the train car does not destroy the folded words. The dimensions allow you to use the set both at home and while traveling.

There is also a children's set. Words are already written on its field - just look carefully at the letters that you have on your hands and lay them out according to the pattern.

How well known is Scrabble in our country?

In the Russian Federation, the budget copy called “Erudite” (formerly “Krestoslovitsa” and “”) is better known, which appeared back in the 60s of the last century. In some cases, they even do it with their own hands, drawing out the field and cutting out chips from cardboard.

Original board game“Scrabble” in Russian began to gain popularity in the post-Soviet period. Now there is even a public organization, the Scrabble Federation of Russia, which unites the most ardent word game lovers and holds tournaments throughout the country.

“Scrabble” can be found at home, at a party, in establishments such as time cafes and themed restaurants. This is a great helper for improving vocabulary and spending time productively for the mind.

Is Scrabble a good family game?

Scrabble is ideal for quiet family evenings and gatherings with friends who prefer intellectual entertainment to test their knowledge.

If you are playing at home level, then strictly following all the rules is not necessary. For example, it will be possible to allow participants to use all cases and declensions, and words either singular or plural. But for a serious game there are clear rules.

What's in the Scrabble kit?

In the big box you will find:

  • rules of the game;
  • playing field 15 by 15 cells;
  • 4 stands for chips;
  • a bag with 104 square dominoes with letters written on them and their “price”.

By the way, as noted above, they call it a game of who knows what. The transcription of the word “scrabble” sounds like “scrabble”, which is exactly what is correct. But more often you can see the spelling and hear it more familiar to the Russian ear "scrabble".

Preparing to play Scrabble

Before you start the game, prepare a piece of paper and a pen. The page will need to be divided into as many columns as there are players, and labeled. Points earned will be recorded here.

Place all the letter dominoes into a bag and mix. Each participant draws one chip blindly - whoever has the chip with the letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet (keep in mind that the “blank” comes before the “A”) goes first. Next - clockwise.

A special dictionary “” or “Scrabble” will also come in handy, where acceptable words are listed. A regular spelling dictionary will also work. You cannot use it when composing lexemes - only when checking in controversial cases.

Participants place stands for dominoes in front of them, take turns, without looking, take 7 dominoes from the bag (the drawn one is removed back during the draw) and place them on the stand.

Purpose of the game

The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible. To do this, you need not only to compose words, but also to place them on the field with maximum benefit in order to earn more. Each player tries to place his dominoes on bonus squares, and the next player tries to take advantage of mistakes by opponents or opportunities that arise.

Mutual assistance and the game of Scrabble (Scrabble) are not compatible, unless it is a training game. The player can only see his chips and operate only with them.

Amateur play time is not limited.

As a result, every word on the playing field should be clearly readable, and it should not turn out to be gobbledygook, otherwise you will not have “Scrabble”, but “scramble” (from English “dump”). Using a grid made up of letters laid out by the players, it should be possible to form words for a crossword puzzle.

Scrabble - rules and strategy of the game

Classic Scrabble is a board game with strict conditions. The rules of Scrabble imply not only the formation of words from letters - this must be done in a strictly defined way.

In Scrabble, the rules limit the choice of words allowed. The foreign vocabulary used should be recorded in Russian spelling in the dictionary, and not rely on pronunciation and transcription. So, you can write “pen” or “cafe” if you play Scrabble in English, but if your game is not “english”, but “Russian”, then you will have to write the translation - “pen” and “coffee”, and not "pen" and "cafe".

The basic strategy of the game is to compose not only long, but the most valuable words - from rare letters and ending up in bonus fields. And, if possible, cut off the enemy’s access to advantageous moves.

In the travel version of Scrabble Travel Deluxe, the rules are completely identical to the original. The board game Scrabble Junior from Mattel has one fundamental difference, which is mentioned above.

What is bingo in scrabble? This is entertainment similar to " Russian lotto“, only instead of numbers there are words, and instead of numbers, letters are drawn from the bag.

How to play Scrabble

From 2 to 4 people participate. They use chips to write interconnected words on the board, similar to a crossword puzzle.

When posting, important conditions must be observed:

  • The letters must be positioned strictly horizontally or vertically, intersecting with those already laid out;
  • It is allowed to build up one word so that a new full-fledged one is obtained (“forest” - “forester”). But you cannot add letters to the middle of a word and end up with nonsense (“ruka” + “lach” = not “kalach”, but “rukalach”);
  • You cannot move tiles that are already lying down in order, for example, to turn a “hand” into a “handle”;
  • You can lay out two words in one fell swoop, if a good neighborhood allows it. One will be read from top to bottom, the second from left to right;
  • It is allowed to make a “bridge” between parallel rows, completing the required word;
  • The “dummy” replaces any letter and remains on the field. Its cost is zero.

Almost all of these rules do not apply to Scrabble. Unexpected turns (Scrabble Twists Turns).

The game ends when all the chips are used up or the players can no longer make a single move.

Explanations for controversial cases

All dominoes touching in a straight line must form one word. You cannot write “porridge” if after the second “a” there is a “p” from the perpendicular “hat” - otherwise it will come out “kashap”;

it is permissible to repeat one word twice;

unlike Scrabble, Scrabble allows the use of plural forms of nouns and other parts of speech;

letters can be built up on both sides of the word (“house” - “adjoining”);

bonus cells are triggered only on the turn when a chip is placed on them;

if a player manages to compose several words during a turn, then he receives points for each according to the basic rules;

The dictionary is needed only for checking - looking for words in it on your own is dishonest.

Mechanics

In Scrabble, the mechanics are based on chance, knowledge and resourcefulness of the participants. Technically, it can be described as laying out words from randomly dropped elements.

Every word counts

Each new word can radically affect the score if it lands well on the board. Therefore, be careful every move.

A little tip: you can make up several short words per turn. Even if they are cheap in themselves, if all the chips are spent on them, you will receive bonus points.

Preparing for the game

Before the start of the game "Scrabble" Prepare a sheet of paper and a pen. Lay out the playing field, decide who will go first, and collect the starting 7 dominoes (they are picked up after each move).

Scoring

The system by which points are calculated seems confusing, but only at first glance.

Each domino with a letter indicates its “price” - how many points its use will bring. Depending on the frequency of use of the letter in the language, this meaning changes:

  • A, B, E, I, N, O, R, S, T – 1 point;
  • D, K, L, M, P, U – 2 points;
  • B, G, E, L, I – 3 points;
  • Y, Y – 4 points;
  • F, W, X, C, H – 5 points;
  • W, E – 8 points;
  • F, Ш, Б – 10 points.

When the letters do not fall on the colored cells, their “price” is simply summed up. For example, a short “pike” – 10+2+2+1= 15 points. And the long “cow” is 2+1+1+1+1+1=7 points.

If the chip lands on a light blue cell, then the number of letter points is multiplied by two, if on a dark blue cell, by three. In “pike” the “sch” lands on a dark blue cell – 10*3+2+2+1=35 points.

If a word overlaps the light red box, the letter's score is not multiplied, but the total for the entire word is multiplied by two. The dark red field is for three. “Pike” – (10+2+2+1)*3=45

Will the word land on several colored cells at the same time? First we multiply the cost of the letters, then we add everything up, then we multiply the entire amount.

Those who were able to use up all seven dominoes in one move receive an additional 50 points.

With one successful move you can earn up to 200 points.

After the final, the cost of all the letters remaining in his hands is deducted from the participant’s total account. And if he has spent all the chips, then the amount of his opponents’ fines is added to him.

Pip exchange

There is an unsuccessful move in which not even the smallest word can be put together. In this case, the Scrabble rules allow you to skip a move and exchange any number of dominoes blindly.

Pass and pass

The participant may not lay out anything and not change dominoes, but simply say “pass”. He gets zero points and the turn moves on to the next one. When all players have said "pass" twice in turn, the game ends - because it cannot continue with ghost players.

Composing the first word

The first word to start the board game is entrusted to the player who wins the toss. The main condition: at least two letters used and the intersection of the central cell with an asterisk. Sometimes the rule is complicated: the first word must be at least five letters or two syllables.

Scrabble (or in the original Scrabble) is a classic and exciting game into words. The goal of the game is to score the most points for words composed on the playing field, which are somehow tied to the words of other players. To play Scrabble you will need at least one partner. You will also need an official playing field and full set seeds with letters. During the game, you will have to come up with words, count points and challenge the incorrect words of your opponents, and, if necessary, change the tiles in your hands if they do not suit you at all. In this case, one player will be responsible for keeping a record of the points scored by all players so that the winner can be determined at the end of the game. If you enjoy this game, you might start hanging out with friends on the playing field more often, or consider joining a Scrabble club and even sign up to participate in related competitions.

Steps

Part 1

Preparing for the game

    Make sure you have everything you need to play Scrabble. Before you start playing, you need to make sure that you have everything you need for it. You will need one game board, 104 letter tiles, one tile stand for each player, and a tile bag. You will also have to find from one to three playing partners.

    Find a dictionary so you can deal with difficult cases. There are situations when during the game one of the players puts out a word that seems wrong to other players or is not a word at all. In such a situation, this word needs to be checked in the dictionary. Therefore, you just need to have a dictionary at hand to deal with such cases.

    Place the letter seeds into a bag and shake it. In order for the seeds and letters to mix well, you need to pour them into a bag, tie it and shake it well. If you don't have a bag, you can simply place the tiles face down on the table and shuffle them.

    Determine who will start the game first. Pass the bag around the circle to each player and ask them to draw one bone from it. Open the elongated letters and place them on the table. The game starts with the player who has the tile with the letter “A” or the letter closest to it (in alphabetical order). Place the letter tiles back into the bag and mix again before completing the letters for the game.

    Pull dice from the bag to play with. Starting with the player who drew the letter closest to “A,” pass the bag around the circle to all players and draw 7 tiles each (without peeking). Do not show your bones to other players. Place them on the dice rack and pass the bag to the next player. All participants in the game must have 7 bones.

    Build new words based on those already laid out. In subsequent moves, new words must build on those already laid out. You cannot place separate words on the playing field; they all must be interconnected.

    Use your letter dice in such a way as to score the most points per turn. It would be wise to think through several options at once and choose the one that will bring you more points. At the same time, try to use the advantages that prize squares on the playing field give players, as well as high-value letters, such as “Ф” and “Ш” or “ъ”. The types of prize squares you will find on the playing field are listed below.

    • Double letter– a tile that lands on a given square receives double the number of points indicated on it.
    • Double word- a word with a letter that lies on such a cell receives a total doubling of points for it.
    • Triple letter– a bone that lands on a given square receives triple the number of points indicated on it.
    • Triple word- a word with a letter that falls on such a cell receives a total tripling of points for it.
  1. Challenge other players' words. If you think that a word posted by another player does not exist or there is a mistake in it, then you can challenge it. The disputed word is checked in the dictionary.

    • If the challenged word is in the dictionary and the player spelled it correctly, then it remains on the playing field and the player receives points for it. The person who challenged such a word misses his turn.
    • If a word is not in the dictionary or contains an error, it is removed from the playing field. The player receives no points and wastes the current turn.
  2. Exchange tiles with letters you don't need. At a certain point in the game, you may decide to exchange some or all of your tiles for new ones. The exchange is considered a move. Unneeded seeds are thrown into a bag and mixed, after which you draw out the same number of seeds as were discarded. Remember that when you make an exchange, you lose the right to form a word on the same turn.

Part 3

Scoring

    Keep track of points as the game progresses. It is very important to keep an accurate score for each player throughout the game. The player who created the word must announce the number of points scored by this word, and the person responsible for keeping track of the points must carefully record the points of all players after each move.

  1. Pay attention to the prize squares of the playing field. Prize squares allow you to increase the number of points you receive for completing a word, so pay special attention to them during the game. You can use the properties of a prize square only if you placed a tile with a letter on it on the current move. Those prize squares whose properties have already been used by you or other players on previous turns are not taken into account again.

    • When the bonus squares for letters and words are taken into account simultaneously, the full points for letters are calculated first, and only then the bonus number of points for doubling or tripling a word is determined. For example, if your word simultaneously covered the “Double Letter” and “Triple Word” squares, then you must first count the double letter, and then multiply the total score for the word by three.

Scrabble (English Scrabble - “rummage around in search of something”) is a board game that can be played by 2 to 4 people, laying out words from the letters they have in a field measuring 15 x 15. In the Russian-speaking environment, it is known as “ Erudite."

Playing field consists of 15x15, that is, 225 squares, on which the participants of the game lay out letters, thereby making up words. At the beginning of the game, each player receives 7 random letters (there are 104 in total in the game). The first word is placed in the middle of the playing field, then the next player can add the word “at the intersection” from his letters. Words are laid out either from left to right or from top to bottom.

Dictionary

It is allowed to use all words listed in the standard dictionary of the language, with the exception of words written in capital letters, abbreviations, and words written with an apostrophe or hyphen. In the Scrabble version, you can use all cases, declensions and tenses.

At the same time, in the game "Scrabble", according to the traditions of Russian linguistic games, it is allowed to use only common nouns in the singular nominative case (or plural, if the word does not have a singular form).

It is prohibited to use a dictionary to look up words. A dictionary is allowed only if it checks for the existence of an already posted word.

At the beginning of the game, everyone is given seven chips. You can post several words in one move. Each new word must be in contact (have a common letter or letters) with previously laid out words. Words are read only horizontally from left to right and vertically from top to bottom.
The first word laid out must go through the central cell.
If a player does not want or cannot lay out a single word, he has the right to change any number of his letters, thereby skipping a move.
Any sequence of letters horizontally and vertically must be a word. That is, the game does not allow random letter combinations that do not represent words that meet the above criteria to appear on the field.
After each move you need to get up to seven new letters.
If a player uses all seven tiles during a turn, he is awarded an additional 50 points.

Scoring and bonuses

Each letter is assigned a number of points from 1 to 10. Some squares on the board are painted in different colors. The number of points a player receives for a given word is calculated as follows:
if the square under the letter is colorless, the number of points written on the letter is added
if the square is blue, the number of letter points is multiplied by 2
if the square is pink, the score of the entire word is multiplied by 2
if the square is blue, the number of letter points is multiplied by 3
if the square is red, the score of the entire word is multiplied by 3

If a word crosses both red and blue cells, then the doubling (tripling) of the word's points takes into account the doubling (tripling) of the letter's points.

Dummy (joker, star)

Also, the set of tiles contains several empty tiles (in the Scrabble version - stars). Such a chip can be used as any letter of the player's choice. For example, a player can put the word “TE*EFON”, where the role of the letter “L” will be played by a dummy.

Rules for scoring and the use of pacifiers may vary and players should agree on the details in advance. Below are possible rules.

Scoring for a dummy:
A dummy always has 0 points ( classic rules Scrabble).
The dummy brings as many points as the letter whose role it plays would bring.

Reusing pacifiers:
After being placed on the field, the dummy is considered played and remains in this place until the end of the game (classic Scrabble rules).
If one player has laid out the word “TE*EFON”, then any player, having the letter “L”, can replace it with a dummy and take it for himself. As a rule, it works additional rule, obliging in this case to use (lay out) the dummy taken from the field in the same move, that is, when you cannot take it for yourself “in reserve.”

It's amazing that this addictive game was invented during the Great Depression, when thousands of people were left without a livelihood. However, the unemployed architect Alfred Butts did not lose hope of creating something worthwhile and got the idea to come up with his own game.

An entertaining board game for children and adults

As a scientist, he began to study board games and saw: the main thing in which games with words are inferior gambling, this is that they are not counted. Alfred decided to fix this. After this he exclaimed: “I will have my own own game, with glasses and words! and began to come up with rules.

Butts did a great job and in his creation combined dependence on chance and ingenuity, using anagrams and crosswords. He determined the number of letters in the set by studying more than one issue of newspapers, identifying the most common and less used ones. Based on the results of this research, he rated each of them with a different number of points.

Then Alfred sat down to come up with the rules and settled on this option: the players, along the way, lay out a word from their letters, so that it “passes” through the one already laid out on the field and brings more points. There are different bonuses (double/triple points per letter/word) depending on where the player places the word on the board, as well as for using all his letters at once.

A ray of light in a dark kingdom

Invented during difficult years, it was designed to distract people from the hopelessness of the situation and picture in their imagination a calm morning on a sunny terrace. The game will entertain two to four people of any age who are inclined to play slowly. And indeed, when playing Scrabble It’s tempting to talk leisurely with a friend about life and love, leaning back in a rocking chair and drinking lemonade on a hot day. We think Alfred spent more than one summer like this :)

The game has the nature of a duel: you need to use bonus cells before your opponent. You will need imagination and the ability to form anagrams (assembling real-life words from an initial set of letters), but this may not be enough to win.

Let's say, if you get the letters c, x, ch, sh, ъ, e and e, and your opponent has a more or less balanced set, all your erudition will be powerless... Although no, there is the word “workshop”. As you can see, this game teaches you not to give up, but to search a little in the palaces of the mind :)

Educational game for the whole family

Since Alfred Butts was a thrifty and thoughtful man, he decided that his idea would not require purchasing anything other than the game itself. The set includes four letter holders, a cardboard box, square letter chips and a bag for them. All components are of nice quality and appearance. Russian analogues and Erudite in this they are slightly inferior to him, but, on the other hand, they cost less.

When you get ready to travel, take with you Scrabble Travel. There is a field with convenient cells, so the words don’t fall apart. And if you like to make fireworks out of letters, then Scrabble wants to come to you so that it can be repeatedly transformed into bright green entertainment :)
