But now there are at least 2 books completely devoted to how to play long backgammon correctly: by the author of this guide, Nazim Akhundov (Moscow, 2007) and Rodion Chebotarev (Dnepropetrovsk, 2010).

Unfortunately, there is still no program that can analyze games and positions in long backgammon at an acceptable level. But let's hope it will appear in the coming years.

This work is an attempt to collect in one place, analyze and process the most important of what the author has studied and published at different times on the topic of "long backgammon".

The work is very conditionally called a reference book. This is mainly due to the fact that the information collected in it is of a diverse nature.

Speaking about the position on the backgammon board, we often use some specific backgammon words, or rather terms. Many of them are clear to backgammon players. But some, without a specific indication of the board, can be confusing.



1. What backgammon is playing with. Checkers, chips, stones. Sometimes the word stones mean zaras. The author suggests using the word “ checkers", Unlike casino chips, which also have a face value ($ 100 chip, $ 10 chip, etc.)

2. The place on the board where checkers are placed. It is called differently: field, hole, position, point. There are 24 of them in total. In the book, I suggested using the word "field". 5. The place where all the checkers are collected at the beginning of the game (point # 1). The words "hand" and "head" are often used. This sometimes leads to confusion. This term is important and frequently used. According to the rules, more than one checker cannot be moved from the “hand” (except for the first move). The book uses the word “ hand". However, it should be recognized that the term "head" is used by players at least as often. Apparently, it is more logical to recognize the equality of both of these terms, i.e. their equal applicability. The author believes that the term “ head" too.



6. Several checkers standing in a row, forming a kind of obstacle. In short backgammon there is the concept of "prime", but there are paired checkers, and in long ones they can be in 1 row. Therefore, such a construction could be called prime, block, overlap. Hereinafter, we will use the term “ block».

7. Several (3 or more) checkers in one point. Sometimes players say "sausage" or "sausage". Options: "column", "stack", "pack". The generally applicable and non-controversial term “ column».

8. Fourth quarter. Often this is the place players call home. Word " House"Is used universally to refer to the fourth quarter.

9. First quarter. To avoid confusion, the first quarter of the board will be called “ base».

How to play backgammon is written in many guides and manuals, both in paper form and on various sites on the Internet. Anyone who knows even a little the rules of this game already considers himself entitled to teach this to other people. And it's good if the rules he knows correspond to the actual rules of the backgammon game. But, applying knowledge in practice, any player begins to understand that he lacks something to win. He knows the rules, plays strictly according to these rules, the values ​​on the dice are also good, but for some reason the opponent constantly wins.

And this happens because the opponent has not been playing backgammon for the first day. He has already worked out a certain strategy for himself and uses it against an unlucky player who does not even know about it. The beginner is sure that the outcome of the game depends solely on the player's dice values, that is, on the luck of this player. If the values ​​are good, then the player will definitely win.

But this is not the case. Of course, the values ​​of the dice also affect the outcome of the game, but you should not discount the tactics of a more experienced player. There are no definite rules, the fulfillment of which will unconditionally lead to the victory in the game of backgammon. Each player himself, over time, understands how it is more profitable to act in a given situation, and determines his own tactics of the game. Therefore, it is simply impossible to teach luck and good luck.

But there are some subtleties of the game that can help a novice player defeat an opponent when playing backgammon. For example, in long backgammon, at the very beginning of the game, it is recommended to cover as many cells as possible on your initial quarter of the game board, that is, on the upper right side. Then the opponent will not be able to bring his checkers to the other side so quickly. But by the rules of the game it is forbidden to completely block all the opponent's checkers with a fence of six occupied cells. This is allowed only if at least one piece of his has already managed to go beyond this fence.

It is also recommended at this time to lead your checkers to their destination as quickly as possible. According to the rules of long backgammon, this is the lower right part of the board for each player. But, since at the same time it is necessary to delay the opponent's checkers, blocking most of the free cells on his path, it is advisable to place your checkers one by one in the cell, and then lead other checkers along them, from the starting point. If possible, it is recommended not to touch the checkers overlapping free cells until all checkers have been removed from the starting cell on the game board. Then you can start displaying others, but in order, starting with the farthest checkers.

If you adhere to this tactic of playing long backgammon, then it is more likely to get a victory over an opponent, provided that this opponent is not a very experienced player. But sometimes even in a duel with an experienced player, simple knowledge of how to win at backgammon leads to victory over an opponent.

  • At the beginning of the game, do not allow your opponent to occupy more than three adjacent positions at your "head". Otherwise, it will create more advantages for him and make it much more difficult for you to withdraw your own chips from the starting field. Accordingly, if the number of dropped points and the game situation allow, try to take similar positions on the side of the enemy.
  • Do not seek to occupy your 6th position from the head, as it does not provide any tactical advantages. It is impossible to move from it to such an important third quarter of the board (to the opponent's side) and it is extremely inconvenient to advance your checkers. It is better to try to get up either a little earlier (at 4-5 positions of the first quarter of the board), or already in the middle of the 2nd quarter, so that from this position you can immediately step onto the opponent's half of the board.

  • From the very beginning of the backgammon game, pay special attention to the jackpot dropped out (duplicated points on the game dice - 2x2, 4x4, 6x6, etc.). The jackpot allows, if necessary, to make four moves instead of two, and this is a very important point. Therefore, initially try to arrange your chips taking into account the possibility of a double. A successful placement and a timely winning jackpot can radically change the entire result of the game.
  • If you see your opponent approaching your 1st and 2nd quarters, try to create obstacles for his chips by sequentially occupying 3 to 5 positions in a row. Six points do not come up very often and a solid line of 5 checkers can significantly slow down an opponent's progress.
  • When you have already come close to the “home” (the last quarter of the board, from where you can start dropping checkers), try to occupy it heaply from the middle, taking the most advantageous positions to which it is easy to move your checkers.
  • While moving, try to defend all your checkers so that none of them is blocked by the opponent's pieces. Otherwise, due to the unsuccessful position of one checker, you can get stuck in place for a long time and lose the entire backgammon game.
