Believe it or not, but Vin Diesel not as far from computer and video games as it might seem at first glance. You may have thought that he agreed to work on the project Wheelman solely for the sake of a solid fee. Quite a logical thought: lately, the gaming industry has increasingly attracted show business stars to create virtual entertainment. But it was not there!

In fact, Vin is an ardent fan of games, especially the tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, in which he has been honing his skills for over twenty years. Moreover, Diesel is the owner of the company Tigon Studios that gave us in 2004 The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay... The developers are currently working on the multiplayer role-playing game Barca B.C., which takes place around the African city of Barca from the era of Hannibal and the Punic Wars. According to Diesel himself, the project is somewhat reminiscent of Age of Conan, and development is likely to take a long time, because this is the game of his dreams, and he treats it with special trepidation. In addition, entering the multiplayer entertainment market is a serious and responsible business. There is a possibility that the release will take place in 2011, because it is then that Vin's picture "Hannibal" will appear on the screens, where he will act as a producer and director.

But all these are plans for the future, and now we will talk about the essentials. That is, about the recently released widely advertised creation of Tigon Studios under the patronage of Midway Games. Vin Diesel's face on the cover, tons of videos on the web, tons of promises - this game has definitely been awaited.

All roads lead to Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and populous cities in Spain, where ancient architecture is in harmony with modern buildings, and the sun is shining brightly in the sky; where birds always sing and beautiful girls sunbathe on the beaches. The tranquility of "paradise" is only occasionally disturbed by the showdown of three rival groups that are desperately fighting for power over the metropolis. But neither the bandits, nor the girls, let alone the birds still know that very soon a "newcomer" will appear in the city, and their former life will seem like a sweet dream to them ...

Milo Berik is a cocky, pumped-up bald guy who drives well and shoots well: that's all the gangs know about him. But he is by no means akin to Niko Bellich: we have an undercover CIA agent in front of us. He has to disrupt an early sale of deadly weapons, and, apparently, the deal will take place in Barcelona. There is only one instruction: to get a case with a blaster by all means. Well, and if possible, survive, although this is not so important.

Milo's head is boiling, and the informants know their business: soon after arriving in the city, Berik begins to work for all three gangs, gradually rubbing into the confidence of their leaders and deputies. In parallel, he collaborates with a couple of thieves, who are also going to grab a precious briefcase and shove it as expensively as possible.

From acquaintance with one, or rather one of them, the game begins. A hot sexy brunette pulled something off and escapes from the cops, of course, using the services of the best driver in the area. Along the way, she tries to explain something to Milo, but she is either very scared, or she does not really know how to talk and loves, but she only turns out to be extremely bad at it. All we learn is that we have to get away from the police and go “over there”.

During the ride, we are taught one of Wheelman's vital tricks - the ramming strike. Sharply jerking the mouse left or right, we observe how Berik instantly throws his car in the indicated direction. Several such targeted hits - and the opponent's car takes off into the air. This picture is even shown to us in close-up, but it was better to do without it: accidents look scary, the car instantly explodes and turns into a pile of black scrap metal, which falls like a sack of potatoes on the asphalt. But the thrill of this spectacle is not even in the poorly traced explosion and not in the terrible physics of the car, which manages to soar up six meters: the driver just sat and remains at the steering wheel, and when the car burns out, he will calmly get out of it and try to catch up with Milo on foot. It also happens that a man gets out on the roof of a car at the moment of an explosion and looks in bewilderment at Berik rushing past. Both we and the bald man reciprocate.

A funny moment is connected with the immortality of policemen: when you run away from them, you cannot shoot at the law enforcement officers. If you hit, the mission will be failed: armed and aggressive uncles, you see, are equated with civilians. How, then, to get rid of the obsessive "tail"? Just blow up the enemy car! It is completely incomprehensible what logic the developers were guided by, but they did not take into account one thing: if the car breaks into pieces, then the driver is then assembled in parts! That is, to shoot a cop is a "mission failed", but to blow it up - so everything is all right, are we going further? Great, you won’t say anything.

But we will assume that we have left the chase after all, and the brunette has been delivered to the address. What to do now? Maybe an American who has never been to Spain before would like to see the sights of Barcelona? This is please. I mean, you can want it. But there is nothing to look at. No, the city is really of considerable size, and a complete detour of the territory in the mode "all courtyards are on" will take an hour and a half. One only gets the impression that the lives of most of the metropolis have been carried away by a deadly virus, and those few who survived fearfully go out into the street and start cars. There are no traffic jams, in principle, because there are five or six cars on the road at most. Everything here is politically correct to nausea: you won't even give an ordinary pedestrian in the jaw. And what? Milo, after all, we have a good guy, a CIA agent, even though he flunked more than a hundred people for the game and framed everyone he could.

Sometimes the desertedness comes just to the point of absurdity. In one of the final missions, Berik arrives at a rally, and his companion shouts: “Oh my God! How many cars, how many people! I've never seen so much in my life! " You know, I haven't seen such a neglected case for a long time either ... Because there is no one on the street! Generally! Leaflets are lying on the asphalt, it is not clear from where a man's voice is broadcasting ... And emptiness. Neither give nor take Judgment Day.

Race against boredom

We spend most of our time racing. Milo is a professional driver, so there is no car without a car. The car fleet is not that big, but decent. All vehicles are licensed, so you can easily recognize Opel, Porsche, Pontiac, etc. The method of stealing "on the go" looks especially impressive: Berik jumps from his car to the one in front at high speed, kicks out the driver with his feet - and that's it, we have a new iron horse at our disposal.

All cars are controlled in the same way, no matter whether you are driving a miniature Smart or a truck. To turn the car, you need to try pretty hard, and then your efforts will be in vain, because after a couple of seconds it will be on wheels again. Perhaps Agent Berik is pushing himself off the ground with his hands?

Each car can be accelerated, and it will sweep at great speed through empty streets, knocking down palm trees and telephone booths, poles and eateries on its way. At the same time, it is fun to watch how a gasoline tanker drives in this mode - as if there are no obstacles on the way at all.

But all this driving would be extremely boring if it were not for the story missions. The development of events, however, can be predicted ten moves ahead, well, nothing, let's pretend to be ignorant. The essence of the missions basically boils down to "hijack", "bring", "catch up and take away." And although the game is not very long (eight to ten hours), all this manages to quickly get bored. At first, of course, it's fun: high speeds, many opponents, huge destruction, adrenaline. And then the bright colors become boring - you want to travel at night, but there is no trace of a change of day. Okay, maybe at least the tasks will become more diverse? But no, everything happens according to the same scenario: I got a task, spent ten minutes to get to the other end of the city, got into a fight with someone, and you go back accompanied by a militant escort. And so all the time. Boring.

This is Javier and Lumi, and we will deal with them.

But you can drive in additional competitions, which are both more fun and increase the capabilities of the protagonist. Here you have thefts, and robberies, and robbery, and street races. This is where the treasure is buried!

Chases will diversify gunfights: Milo knows how and loves to shoot at high speeds. You can aim at the tires, and then the enemy vehicles will start to drift. It is also possible to shoot Berik at the passengers who are constantly striving to shoot. Well, and, in the end, in the driver to remove the problem from the road.

Diesel's hero has two special techniques: "aimed shot" and "cyclone", which are available only in driving mode. In principle, they differ little from each other: both slow down time, both give a glimpse of the world from the driver's cabin with an outstretched pistol in hand. The only fundamental difference: the "cyclone" allows you to shoot backward, and the "aimed shot" - exclusively forward.

Dumb disassembly

In contrast to the showdown on wheels, the foot battles were unsuccessful. There are many reasons for this: few types of weapons, stupid artificial intelligence, Milo's inability to jump and swim. If you accidentally fall into the water, you will fail the mission. And this is not only inconvenient, but also insanely stupid: such a healthy colossus, like Vin Diesel, is drowning in a puddle!

And the opponents want to ask two questions: "Where did the circus go?" and "Why were you left?" They shoot accurately, but they don't like to hide, they always push ahead, and if they stop, they won't move. Not only that, they have excellently developed not only lateral, but also rear vision: the enemies manage to notice Berik several hundred meters away, standing with their backs to him. Maybe this would complicate life, but not in the case of Wheelman, because our agent has a pocket computer and, of course, a GPS-navigator, on which the adversaries are marked with red circles. So you can once jump out from around the corner, show yourself to them, climb back, periodically glancing at the map and the approaching scarlet icons, and then at the right time lean out and make a couple of control shots.

If you hit the head, you will instantly kill. But God forbid to please on the legs! Your gaze will see the dance of small sick swans: the enemy will be twisted in place, and can be twirled for a very long time, especially if he is in a bulletproof vest. Wonders of physics, and more! True, they do not end there: the moments with Milo flying out of the motorcycle seat are absolutely incomparable. You need to see how he is twisted in the air: he does the twine, and touches the heels with his shoulder blades, and his forehead - the belly! But if you fly into an oncoming train, then Berik will not just die, he will also remain in the saddle!

I was disappointed by the abundance of invisible walls and unspoken prohibitions. No staircase can be climbed, no door can be entered. Milo was deliberately shielded from the outside world so that he would not think for a second about playing for the other team.

Even he rarely opens his mouth, but his voice sounds so confident and impudent that, willy-nilly, you believe: everything will be as it is said. But this is in the original, with localization the situation is much worse. Mistakes in translation are half the trouble, but when the dialogue is conducted with closed mouths or the line has already been said, and the lips are still twitching, this is, to put it mildly, unprofessional. And the work of the actors in the Russian version is very far from ideal: the intonations are lost, the charm of Diesel's bass has evaporated. It seems that the characters were voiced by a team of apathetic actors. I wanted much more, but it worked ... No, it didn't work at all.

These words can be said about the whole game as a whole. Did not work out. Tons of promises and pretty words were drowned in mediocre implementation. A deserted city, mediocre graphics, repetitive missions and oaky artificial intelligence outweigh the few positive aspects that Wheelman still has.


The first mission is the training mission. We are watching the introductory video, we are waiting for a girl who just committed a robbery to jump into the car, and of course the police noticed her. Press on the gases and drive wherever she tells you. Nothing difficult is foreseen here, just follow the instructions that you will be given to the chase campaign. Take the girl to her destination. Meeting with Benito

Before the start of the mission, you will be given a weapon and taught to shoot. After practicing shooting, we go to Benito. As it turned out, you are not the only one hunting for him, having dealt with everyone who is not pleasing to you, we jump into the car. Now the meat itself will begin. Motorcycles and cars with armed people will go after you, it is useless to shoot back, use an aimed shot and a cyclone. If the car caught fire or smoke, we change it.

Find a family

Your new friend is Che's friend Mickey. In the video you are talking to him, but suddenly they called you, this is Miguel (the same man from the car repair shop for whom you stole cars at the beginning of the game), he was taken hostage, and asks to help him. Having reached the tunnel of the abandoned metro, you say goodbye to your biker friends. When you reach the dead end, continue on foot. Get ready, they are already waiting for you there. When you reach Miguel, run back to the motorcycles with him until you leave the city, guard him, as soon as you leave, he will show you where to go. Then Che, the conversation with which he broke off at the beginning of the mission, will reveal the name of the next person on your way.

Zapateado

Arriving at the club, you will see the very girl you gave a lift at the very beginning of the game. She works here as a dancer. Follow her to the dressing room, as it turned out she is not very happy to see you and runs away along with the one you came for.

Miguel bites

The next mission will be given from Stavo, Miguel's brother. You need to steal a truck from the Romanians. Go to the warehouses, they are already waiting for you there. Make your way to the truck, when you get into it a little later, Miguel will sit next to you. A bar of "health" of the car will appear on the screen, but do not think that it is consumed slowly, the road you will have is long and difficult. Use ram attacks to the cars pursuing you. As soon as you find yourself on the territory of the "Chulos Canallas" grouping they will turn you away from you.

In this mission you will need to steal a van with prisoners. The cops will get in your way. But that's okay. Miguel will show you the route, he will often get confused, and the timer will run out, so you will have to go quickly. Look at the mini-map for blue dots, if they suddenly turn red, it means that you had better drive away from this place or else the cops will see you.

Chill out

Follow the route. Yellow objects will be marked on the map, try to destroy them. There are also those that are not marked, they are additional and here you want, destroy do not want do not destroy. We are briskly looking for transport, in the middle of the arena there is a jeep, which is just suitable for such cases. Go to the very top of the amphitheater, there you will notice Sorin in his sports car. Use ram attacks, you should not pay special attention to all opponents that will interfere with you, only if you really need it, eliminate them. But here we go again to attack our heads. Your old acquaintance has decided to steal documents. Without hesitation, jump on the motorcycle. On a straight line, you have no chance. There is no point in shooting at him yet. Fight off everyone who will interfere with you. It will be possible to shoot the fugitive only in the subway. Watch the trains, they can run you down. Let's go, shoot, wait until Che smashes his bike. Let's get out of ours, flocks of enemies will immediately attack you, there are a lot of cartridges so nothing terrible will happen, fight them off. Che continues to run away again (just a coward, of some sort), only now he chose to take the subway. We grab the motorcycle and go after it. You can't get it inside, so you need to shoot the cars. We go to the left side of the train and in the aimed fire mode we shoot at the train connection. Cars will immediately start to drive up to you. If they ram you, then it is best to avoid these attacks with ram buttons. When the last carriage remains, you will have the opportunity to finally kill Che. To do this, you need to eliminate the driver. And then Che himself.

We go to the underground garage. They will be waiting for you there. This is where that machine gun from the last mission will come in handy. We kill everyone who is there. We get into the car and leave from there. You will, of course, be persecuted. Change cars as soon as something happens to them. Now is the time to scare the Chulos. Paolo will help in this not tricky business. We're going to the mark, it's easier here than in the case of the Romanians. There are barrels, shoot them. Then you will be pursued, but I think that it will not be difficult for you to fight them off. As it turned out, the gangs need to be pitted against each other again. Again, the Romanians will get it first. They don't want Chulos to run street races. We drive the Romanians to the place. We kill motorcyclists with aimed shots, which is quite simple and fast. But the chase will be difficult for you. Change cars, especially don't get involved in shootouts. Better to go to Romanian territory. Go to Stavo, he will ask you to return the goods. On a motorcycle we go to the truck, which contains the cargo. We jump into the truck at full speed and drive away from the pursuers. We are going to Paolo, he gives the task to steal an auto transporter from the Romanians. Of course, they won't just give it away. Make sure that the Romanians do not come behind you when you shoot back from them. The truck will be chased again, but it's very strong, so you don't have to worry too much about it. Now you have to choose who to kill: Stavo, Radu or Paolo. The killing algorithm is the same everywhere. First you need to kill a mountain of bodyguards. Then destroy what he tries to leave on. The easiest thing is to kill Radu or Paolo, because Stavo will leave in a sports car, and it will be difficult to catch up with him.

The rescue

You have to save Lumi and Javier. They are locked in the church, to get there, you need to run down the street without getting too carried away by gunfights, because inside the church your help is more important than outside. Near one of the corpses, there should be a machine gun, take it, it will be useful to you. The next leader will appear in the church, who will appear depends on who you killed in the previous mission. First, remove the guard, and then take on the boss, here you need a machine gun, shoot him. If you put all the cartridges that you have for this machine gun into it, then it will die. After his death, run to the van, do not turn anywhere, but go straight, there will be a very beautiful jump out the window. Take Lumi and Javier to the square, you can take your time. After you have driven them, change your car, I advise you to take a motorcycle. We go for the limousine and, having waited for the right moment, we jump into it. Drive to the protected area. The cops will not touch you yet, but as soon as a client sits down to you, the chase will begin after you. Drive Lumi and Javier to the van, get ready, you will need to jump over to them. After you jump into the van with them, you will need to break away from the pursuit. Once everything calms down, head to the green mark on the map. But the mission does not end there, as soon as you arrive at your destination, you will be raided. These are the people of the last remaining leader. Go for the van! Do not attack him, it does not make sense, it is better to attack the cars that interfere with you, sooner or later you will become the object of pursuit, and not they. Now you just need to go to the ambush set up by Lumi and Javier. You don't even have to kill the last boss, they will do it for everything. The last task in this mission is to take Lumi home.

Take Halo

So the game is coming to an end. This is the last mission. You need to take the documents to the buyer. As it turned out, the buyer, he is your employer Halo, a CIA agent, will try to escape with the documents. Which, in principle, was to be expected. Again we rush in pursuit, this time very fierce. It is better to take the car stronger, because with such attacks, the usual car will have to be changed every minute. Halo will try to escape on the yacht. Vin Diesel as CIA agent Milo Berik goes to Barcelona to kick the sirloin of the local mafia. It is impossible to take such a plot seriously, and the authors, quite rightly, did not put pressure on the drama of the events. Instead, they raised the degree of madness to the limit and staged a grandiose car war on the screen, in terms of entertainment that is not inferior to the best Hollywood blockbusters. During the time that you spent reading these three sentences, in Wheelman you can easily ditch several cars, demolish tables in a roadside cafe at full speed and knock down a couple of pillars.

How it all began?

Wheelman was announced back in 2006 - this is the first game in the development of which the studio Tigon, founded by Vin Diesel himself, took part. Then it was believed that the action would be released in early 2007 along with the film of the same name. However, there was no release either in 2007 or later, and in February of this year, Midway filed for bankruptcy altogether, transferring the rights to publish the Ubisoft project. Nevertheless, Wheelman still saw the light, and its localized version for the PC is released in Russia two weeks earlier than in the US and Europe. But the exact date of the premiere of the film has not yet been announced.

What is it about?

The Wheelman's plot is a typical product of the Hollywood conveyor, which the viewer is regularly treated to in both movies and games. CIA agent Milo Berik, played by the inimitable bald Diesel, travels to Barcelona to gain confidence in the local criminal establishment and prevent a major robbery. Building relationships with the mafia, Berik travels around a huge metropolis consisting of several districts, visiting elite casinos and strip clubs. At such moments, the project painfully resembles Grand Theft Auto 4, but the darkness instantly flies away, as soon as Milo gets into a mess.

How is it played?

Unlike GTA 4, the most interesting and the main part of the missions and the game as a whole is the chases, which are accompanied by unthinkable stunts and colorful explosions. Moreover, cars are not a means of transportation, but the main weapon. They differ from each other in speed and mass - and the heavier the car, the more deadly it is. The intensity of passion during a fast race through the streets is comparable to Burnout Paradise. Enemies press on from all sides, and Milo pushes them off the road and rams them at full speed. Spare parts scatter like fireworks in different directions, mind-blowing car accidents are shown in slow motion, and city cars are used as mobile obstacles. They can and should be pushed under the wheels of their pursuers, arranging grandiose accidents.

This pace of action in GTA 4 never dreamed of. For example, you don't have to stop to swap your blazing rattle car for a whole car. Berik simply jumps to another car at full speed. Also, here it is not at all necessary to slow down in order to finish off an unfriendly driver with a well-aimed shot. It is enough to press one button - as time slows down, and the camera takes a convenient angle for shooting. In the same way, you can throw opponents off the tail: Berik himself will turn the car 180 degrees, and the player will only have to aim and pull the trigger. True, for accurate shooting on the move, it is necessary to fill in the so-called "attention scale", but this is not difficult to do. Prize points are awarded for knocking down pillars, jumping from car to car, ramming - in a word, for everything that makes up chases in Wheelman.

What does it look and sound like?

It's just that the whole world around us is designed in such a way that every collision turns into an epic car accident without five minutes.

Of course, the authors promised all this at the development stage, and, it would seem, there is nothing to be surprised at. Tigon Studios kept their word and issued a solid quality project. But Wheelman is still surprising, because we, in all honesty, did not fully believe in success. The hackneyed criminal theme, the hackneyed scheme of car shootouts in a big city, the protracted development and financial problems of the publisher - all this did not inspire optimism. But in the end, we still got an excellent hurricane action game that managed to find its niche in the crowded genre.

Let's forget about rams, they will only cause unnecessary damage. It is better to use Cyclones and aimed shots. Now it is time to strike at the Romanians themselves with the help of Stavo. Let's start by destroying the Rada warehouses. We grab the car "Chulos" and rush to the underground parking. Of course, we will not be welcomed there with open arms, so we take out the machine gun we have stored up from the last mission and start hunting for those who get in the way. After the deed, you will have to run away on all four wheels. It's good that it is now allowed to change cars during the chase. Next, let's parrot "Chulos". Comrade Paolo will help us with this - we are going to him. He will give the task - to destroy the unfriendly machines. Meta will be even easier than in the case of the Romanians - there are few soldiers on the spot, but there are plenty of barrels that undermine them. Sluggish "catch-up" of difficulties will not create either. However, it is too early to rejoice. It turns out that the gangs will have to play off one more time (and then another, though - only to finish off already). Let's start with the Romanians again. They want to prevent Chulos from running street motorcycle races. The car of the Romanians will be useful to us only at first, when the competition begins, then the car will be allowed to change. Dealing with motorcyclist racers is easy enough. For one aimed shot, you can easily shoot two Spaniards. But the pursuit will be powerful enough to give us a lot of nerves. About five cars with machine gunners in the windows will follow the main hero. The cars will have to be changed regularly, we try not to go into battles, but return to the territory controlled by the Romanians as soon as possible. We are going to Stavo. He will ask Milo to get the goods that did not go to Che, who was killed by him. The cargo is in a van in the port, guarded by a dozen bandits. On the bike that "Chulos" will give us, however, this problem can be solved as simple as shelling pears - at high speed, as if nothing had happened, rush past the militants and quickly jump into the van. The pursuit will begin, but our car is strong enough to damage the cargo properly. Finally, the final chord is a visit to Paolo. We will beat the Romanians. We go to the border of the territories and set off for the car transporter in the reserved transport. It is guarded, by habit, by a large accumulation of bandittos, but this time the quantity does not mean quality at all. The main thing is to make sure that the gangsters do not end up behind us. Of course, the truck will not be released just like that - you will have to get rid of the chase for the nth time. The truck, we dare to assure, will withstand a hundred automatic rounds and a dozen ram attacks. Now it's time to deal with the gangs one more time (aren't you tired?), Already on your own. For these purposes, Javier has prepared some "surprises". The "surprises" will be mined cars, which will thoroughly wag the pursuers from the police. As soon as we come off, we immediately follow to the parking lot. Assignment: eliminate the remaining leader of the gang And the last surviving leader is already waiting for us in the parking lot. Only now, as always, you will not wait for concrete help - you just need to follow the van (and then make it follow us) to the place on the map where our friends decided to set up an ambush. You don't need to personally eliminate the boss - Lumi will do it for the protagonist in the cutscene. For the service rendered, it is a sin not to give the girl a ride home. Additional tasks In addition to the main storyline, Wheelman also boasts numerous side quests that unlock as you progress through the main campaign. As usual, they have absolutely no influence on the single, and their implementation is purely voluntary. However, it is no less useful - thanks to the successful overcoming of the assigned tasks (or rather, upon reaching the highest rank), it is possible to improve the performance of our car and open new garages.

Taxi

The task is to take a passenger to a specific point in the allotted time, just like in the legendary Crazy Taxi series. It is especially pleasing that, unlike, for example, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, the passenger does not care how we drive - even hit a dozen oncoming cars.

Rage

It is necessary to demolish the objects of the environment. The more (and more often) the better.

Fugitive

For a certain period of time, you need to get to the safe house, fighting off the restless pursuers. The optimal algorithm for completing this task is obvious - we start the mission on the truck and just rush to the mark. We practically do not pay attention to the enemy guys trying to catch us.

King of the road

Perhaps the most interesting third-party assignment. It is a conventional circuit race in the standard sense of the word through the streets of Barcelona. There are six cars, we need to arrive first (or second or fourth). The race goes through checkpoints (again, as in all GTA clones). Opponents can be rammed and shot with an aimed shot, this will raise the rank, but you cannot destroy vehicles with the Cyclone.

Gun

The weakest weapon, forever tied to Senor Berik. A direct clash with even two opponents with this weapon in hand means in most cases inevitable death. In the head - and that kills as much as three or four shots. Use only in extreme cases, when there are no cartridges at all, and we are about to be killed.

Rapid fire, but weak. In addition, it greatly takes the sight upward when firing and has a small magazine. Will go against small groups when there is nothing better lying around.

Kalashnikov assault rifle

Well, where can you go without the unfading Kalash? Powerful, aiming is a good choice.

The slightly less legendary and powerful Fly will also be useful given the smaller bullet spread. We aim at the head and shoot. The beauty!

It comes across extremely rarely, mainly Paolo's militants are armed with it. In terms of its combat performance, it is approximately equal to the AK.

Winchester

Shotguns have always been assigned the role of melee weapons in confined spaces. Wheelman does not look like a "corridor" shooter under any sauce, so the Winchester is absolutely useless here.
